Chewing Gum Revelations about the Relations

My Dear Relatives close by and far afield, the science of ancestral lineages is progressing rapidly. As it shows, nearly each of us is related to everyone else via some DNA (desoxy-ribonucleic acid) fragments that we inherited from our Neanderthal- GREAT-(GREAT-…) grand-mothers and -fathers.

As an article at dailygamingworld.com states “A shocking discovery is that modern humans and Neanderthals mated several times during the last ice age, although our lines split 800,000 years ago. For this reason, many people now have Neanderthal DNA.”

I don’t know why that would be shocking, either to you or the late Neanderthals. Doesn’t everyone have ancestors?

So, what about the chewing gum?

As I understand it and as surprising as it may sound, recent findings of certain (human) DNA fragments in an ancient “chewing gum” are said to prove our ancestry beyond any doubt. There it says “She [the chewing gum chewing girl] lived on an island in the Baltic Sea around 3,700 B.C. She was lactose intolerant and may have suffered from gum disease, and she had recently dined on a meal that included ducks and hazelnuts. Like many ancient European hunter-gatherers, she was likely blue-eyed with dark skin and hair.”

Who would have thought that ancient chewing gum could be of such importance to our common forebearers?

Our common ancestors may have been the mysterious Denisovans or even much older proto-humans or hominins called Australopithecines, who lived close to a million years ago, but what are a few years among relatives?

No doubt, you are aware that neither evolution nor life on earth is a straight path forward. Just look at the dinosaurs. They lived (quite well) at a time when the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels were between 2,000 and 4,000 ppm (parts per million, or roughly five to ten times higher than what they are now.

Dinosaurs

The dinosaurs came about some 230 million years ago and over the following 160 million years developed into a variety of distinct creatures.  Some did quite well, others not so. But what really did them in, all in one fell swoop, was an asteroid falling from the sky.

That piece of extraterrestrial rock, estimated to be only a few miles in diameter but travelling at a speed of 30+ miles/SECOND caused tremendous mayhem here on this planet. The impact, known by geologists as the “KT-boundary” event occurred some 66 million years ago and resulted in the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event, a mass extinction which destroyed a majority of the world’s Mesozoic species, including all dinosaurs, except some early bird and reptile species.

Tyrannosaurus rex and all the other large dinosaurs disappeared, more or less instantly, at least in the geologic time scale.

The few species that survived that cataclysmic impact were small creatures, living mostly in burrows and caves, barely clinging to life, even under favorable conditions. Somehow they survived and over the next 60 million years grew into a large group of mammals. Hominids didn’t show up until the end of that period.

Hominids

Proto- and later hominids are thought to have come about only a few million years ago.  Even the Neanderthals, who were around for approximately half a million years died out approximately 40,000 years ago (except for those of us who may carry some of their genes) and didn’t make it much past their prime. Similarly, our other cousins or ancestors, the Cro-Magnon people, who were around as late as 20,000 years ago may also have left some DNA that we are now enjoying.

What to Do?

So, forget the carbon dioxide nonsense and try to make the best of life! Who knows when the next geological “boundary-event” may happen?

  1. I gather I have about the max amount of Neanderthal DNA found in modern humans – about 4%

I am sure it does something for me but I don’t know what!!

  2. I think this site just lost allot of credibility with this one article.
Sorry this is non-sense about the dinosaurs. They did not die from any rock – they died during a magnetic reversal – a big one – according to the books Not by Fire but by Ice and Magnetic Reversals and Evolutionary Leaps. It clearly states in one of those books that the dinosaurs died from electrocution caused by a magnetic reversal – in severe agony. Not from any rock impact.
There was never a hole big enough to prove the impact theory!! Remember??

  3. A convenient myth.! If ancient humans were much hardier, lived much longer lifespans, were larger due to a much more oxygenated world(As it was during that time period). Then Neandrethal are not really Neandrethal. But rather just ancient humans of that time!

A convenient myth is that there was a separation of species! The difference between a modern scientist making claims using a current world set. And of course the TRUTH!

Consider your brow bone continues to grow your entire lifetime. You know a old man with extended brows. Now imagine a human that lives 150-300 years, how bog a brow that human would have. Then double it again, say 500-800 years. You would find that “cro-magnon” and “neandrethal” are just older versions of us!

  4. Apparently mankind is responsible for the coming mass extinction whereby an extra 280 or so molecules of CO2 per million molecules of air will cause such catastrophic warming and other uncontrollable runaway feed back warming effects that we’re all toast.

Perhaps it wasn’t an asteroid but all the methane farting herbivores that caused the dinosaurs extinction event – after all methane is the most powerful greenhouse gas.

Geez that stuff is so stupid I am amazed I can type it without falling off my chair.

  5. 40,000 years ago, northern Europe was under ice. Neanderthals lived in a narrow band across southern Europe into Asia.

Then a big volcano in Italy IIRC covered their range in ash. In caves, you find their habitation below the ash layer, not above.

Then genetic swamping diluted their genes as “modern” humans arrived and the land recovered.

Neanderthals made the first chemical glue (for their spear points) and did a complex kind of napping points. They were just as capable as moderns. But when a huge volcano wipes out most of your population center and your game animals, it is very hard to recover.

    The volcano risk still exists…

  6. There are so many good things in the World to learn, but reading so much news or information from alienated people. I would ask (even for a moment) to turn off the ‘internet’ of the world and make people turn off their minds and mainly to read books … real books. Or just that they remember to take their medicine..cause they’re insane.

  7. Neither shocking-considering the mating habits of modern Man-nor surprising, since the liberals daily exhibit the Neanderthal DNA they carry in their brain cells.

  8. Cro-Magnon were modern human in every way. It’s complicated, but to simplify: Cro-Magnon simply means that their genes were not filtered through natural selection to show “agriculturalist” mutations. There are many people alive today whose genes would be considered 100% Cro-Magnon and/or Hunter-Gatherer. “We” didn’t “evolve” from Cro-Magnon. Similar to domesticated animals selected to be stupider from their wild counterparts, humans also became weaker and stupider as they settled down and became agriculturalists; although it is not simply genetic changes. Agriculturalist societies, for example, had greater access to calories (on average) compared to their Cro-Magnon/Hunter-Gatherer counterparts, yet their diet no longer contained a variety of foods and therefore agriculturalists often suffered from nutritional deficiency. As mentioned; it’s quite complicated. The point is: Cro-Magnon were modern humans.
