Climate-change expedition scrapped due to very severe ice conditions

A team of scientists – aboard an icebreaker, mind you! – had to abandon their expedition because of hazardous ice conditions. Ice chunks measured 16 to 26 feet (5 to 8 m) thick.

The “very icy conditions” were caused by climate change, says the group’s leader.

12 Jun 2017 – About 40 scientists were using the icebreaker CCGS Amundsen for a 133-day expedition across the Arctic,  part of a $17-million, four-year project to look at the effects of climate change.

They began their trip on May 25 in Quebec City, but due to bad ice conditions off the coast of Newfoundland, the icebreaker was diverted to help ferries and fishing boats stuck in the ice. Some had even took on water.

‘Very severe ice conditions’

According to the Canadian Coast Guard, the conditions were unlike anything ever seen before in the area.

“It was just extreme ice conditions that required everything that we’ve got in order to make sure we were able to provide the services,” said Julie Gascon, the coast guard’s assistant commissioner for the central and Arctic region.

Strong northeastern winds started packing in ice in late April and never stopped, said Gascon. The result was sea ice conditions treacherous for even an icebreaker to navigate.

“We never had any issues in the past of this nature,” she said. “Very severe ice conditions.”

According to David Barber, a climate change scientist at the University of Manitoba and leader of the expedition, the thick, dense ice had traveled down from the High Arctic.

“It’s very much a climate-change driven phenomenon,” said Barber. “When you reduce the extent of the ice and reduce the thickness of it, it becomes more mobile.”

The warming action can loosen ice and broken icebergs can travel long distances on ocean currents, said Barber.

  1. The very icy conditions were caused by Climate Change, well Duh the Arctic is getting colder. Freezing weather accounts for a lot of Ice. Sorry a little sarcasm is called for.

    • The ice isn’t even in the Arctic really it’s around Newfoundland and the entrance to the Labrador Sea….Iceberg country not straight up sea ice country

  2. Total nonsense about the ice coming from the “high arctic”. The satellites show the “high arctic” is still locked in ice and we are a long way out from any possible Northwest Passage in 2017.
This year the arctic sea ice extended well into Newfoundland’s East Coast. Today’s current satellite image shows the Arctic sea ice is still parked where it formed in NFLD.

  3. Hmm … ice from the north breaking up and heading south … not southern waters freezing up to form ice … if you have a bowl of water with ice on top and want to get the ice melted … what better way to do so than to break it up into pieces and mix it all about … sounds like an oceanic mixing dynamic akin to atmospheric mixing … latterly, that being where some force pushes the jet stream(s) toward the equator (or at least in that direction) and atmospheric mixing results …

Mix ice with waters further south … what’s your guess … the ice chunks will melt … or those spreading ice chunks will freeze the southern waters over?

Hmm … the ice cubes in my glass of water don’t freeze the water … the water in the glass melts the ice cubes … eventually …

Sherlock might suggest to Watson “that’s elementary” … do you think? 😉

Last time I checked when a lake or river freezes over … it’s a part of a cooling trend … but when the frozen lake or river surface(s) show the ice breaking up … it’s usually a sign of spring. 😉

    • Cam,

You forgot one thing. If you mix ice in water that usually has no ice in it, that water gets much colder. Example? When the Titanic sank people in the water only survived 5-15 minutes. When the Hood blew up and sank in the battle with the Bismark the two survivors had to tread water for hours before they were rescued. The difference? There was no ice in the water in the case of the Hood survivors.

When cold waters come south the water is dense and sinks below the warmer waters, but ice cannot sink. Therefore ice can chill surface waters further south, including even the northern edge of the Gulf Stream.

In 1817 such a huge amount of ice came south that whaling ships could penetrate an “unprecedented” distance north, at the same time icebergs were seen an “unprecedented” distance south, even grounding on the coast of Ireland. Effect? The Atlantic was so chilled that the western part of Europe experienced “The Year With No Summer.”

      Elementary, Sherlock.

    • They believe calving from Greenland’s glaciers have caused the ice to be particularly thick this year. Which I have zero doubt about because Greenland has had a record winter in ice gain and that glacier ice has to go somewhere. It’s also pretty worrisome when you consider this is exactly where the Laurentide Ice Shield started and retreated to. We should look to see if this is persistent

  4. Oh Surprise Surprise.
Didn’t they take any notice of our Australian bunch of experts (drip’s under pressure) that tried going to Antarctica a couple of years ago and got themselves stuck in the ice down there and then the two icebreakers that also got stuck trying to free them.
Costs to Australian Govt in the millions.

  5. I think we should scrap summer and winter and just have spring and autumn because of the enormous difference in temperatures between the two. We are likely to end up dying from not coping with the drastic changes. We hosted some Chinese students one summer. They came from -20 deg C to an Australian heat wave of 43 deg C (a difference of 63 deg C or 145 deg F) and some had to be hospitalized – but surprisingly. . . . none died!!!!

  6. These people are no-brainers . Justification for more ice is global warming . This happens when ideology supersedes reality .

    • Actually, they are brainers. Did you not notice one BIG item in the article. The expedition is funded with $17 Million dollars. They are enjoying being funded for four years! This is the real story of the warmists, lots and lots of lovely funding into their retirement. When the next Maunder Minimum hits I hope that we can claw-back all of the money just like they want to do now to Oil execs. By comparison we are talking Billions again mere millions for the execs.

      • You must be joking, once a Government climate grant has disappeared into the AGW funding slush fund in these corrupt North American Universities it is lost for ever.
David Barber, a climate change scientist at the University of Manitoba and leader of the expedition, should spend some time reviewing repeatable, cyclic spring weather periods during the 5 year period between Solar Cycles – called the Solar Minimum, Reduced EUV solar cycles such as SC20, the four solar cycles of the Gleissberg minimum at the start of the last century, and Dalton the previous Grand solar Minimum.
He will find that atmospheric air currents generate North Easterly flows from the Greenland/Iceland gap and push sea Ice from these coastal sea regions towards Newfoundland.
He can’t accept that the heavy ice in Canadian waters is regional Ice generated during the Winter just finished – a late finish I might add, yet it’s still under way in mid-June in the Canadian high Lands
But then again the AGW lobby would never mention that the Sun’s energy output or lack of it, is the root cause of climate change on this planet.

  7. It’s very much a climate-change driven phenomenon,” said Barber. “When you reduce the extent of the ice and reduce the thickness of it, it becomes more mobile.”

tell me how up to 16foot PLUS ice is thin rotten etc?
    reduced extent?
    really?

utter rubbish and i just bet some lookingg will bring records of the same events prior as well
gutter journalism for morons to believe once again.

  8. It irritates me that an idiot like Barber passes for a “scientist”. Increasing sea-ice due to (non-existent) global warming ? Really!

  9. But the ice is growing and is thicker than expected. And ‘unlike anything ever seen before’ – I doubt that. Very little is ever unprecedented. It is just thoughtless drivel.

  10. More cognitive dissonance from these so-called scientists. If the ice is thinner and creating more bergs than why aren’t they melting faster and disappearing before they reach Newfoundland? White is black and black is white. 2 + 2 = 5. George Orwell could have used these guys for his scientists in 1984.

  11. It really is SO sad that they cover every kind of phenomena with the “climate change/global warming” mantra. I hope he sleeps well with his pillow stuffed with dollar bills,

The sad part is for some of these people, they truly believe the drivel they spout because they won’t allow themselves to look at evidence or think for themselves since it would detract from their income to do so, and the only god they follow is affluence.

  12. “According to David Barber, a climate change scientist at the University of Manitoba and leader of the expedition, the thick, dense ice had traveled down from the High Arctic.

“It’s very much a climate-change driven phenomenon,” said Barber. “When you reduce the extent of the ice and reduce the thickness of it, it becomes more mobile.”

So, in first paragraph it’s “thick, dense ice” that’s traveling south, but in the second paragraph it’s “reduce the thickness of it, it becomes more mobile.” Isn’t that a bit contradictory?

    • Speaking a generalized truth and assuming people will buy the connection lie.

Of course reducing extent and thickness of ice will make it more mobile.

But that’s not *really* why the ice is there, now is it.

  13. If anyone ever says to you “why would climate scientists lie” just remember this was “part of a $17-million, four-year project to look at the effects of climate change.”

Hell, who wouldn’t defend an unproven hypothesis that provides employment traveling to the world’s most exotic locations “to look at the effects of climate change.” ???

Visit places like the Arctic, Antarctic, South Sea and Indian Ocean Tropical Islands, the Great Barrier Reef etc etc and all you really have to do is “to look at the effects of climate change” and get paid handsomely for the terrible traumatic strain of caterwauling over less than 0.1°C per decade which is unmeasurable anyway.

They may not be making millions – except Gore that is – but they are well paid and they produce nothing at all.

The alternative to this lifestyle is to remain in their University or wherever lecturing to bored students who’s really rather be at the pub increasing their chances of getting laid.

Who wouldn’t sign up to “a $17-million, four-year project to look at the effects of climate change” ???

  14. Did anybody tell Al Gore about this?????
It doesn’t look like his past suspicions are working too well……..

  15. Its worse than just fraud from these so called scientists …. really, its to stupid to be stupid so what else is going on? What about a Trojan Horse to pull the human race into a false narrative and being unprepared for food shortages to kill a lot of us off …. You think conspiracy theory (resulting in fact)? Well its as good as let’s get rid of plant food CO2 to save man kind and all the vanishing diversity caused by obvious neglect and greed, a conspiracy fact.

  16. Don’t ever forget this cult has called for jailing people who don’t agree with them and have labeled what we humans all naturally breathe out a pollutant.

We should not forget this is not just about fraud, not just about greed, this is about power over humanity, and these lunatics will do anything, say anything to gain that control. If they get what they are after, with the truth and reality out the window, even Orwell couldn’t have imagined what’s in store.

  17. SO the large amount and size office is due to Manmade Globull Warming (aka. climate change)? Are all scientists insane now?

  18. Barber doesn’t make any sense what he’s saying at the end.
It’s the increasing extent of the ice and increasing thickness why ice flows further south in the spring. The more ice you have, the more of it will flow south – including icebergs.

  19. “About 40 scientists were using the icebreaker CCGS Amundsen for a 133-day expedition across the Arctic, part of a $17-million, four-year project to look at the effects of climate change.”

Talk about creating a job for yourself and it hits you in the face!
