“Cruel frosts” across Russia

Temperatures far below normal – Emergency Ministry announced an emergency warning in Moscow.

“In connection with the influence of the frontal zone in Moscow and the Moscow region in the next 1-3 hours with the preservation of the night of January 19, snow is expected, sometimes strong, snowstorm,” the report said.

The department recommended that drivers comply with the speed and distance on the roads, do not make sharp maneuvers, overtaking and rebuilding, do not park cars under poorly fortified structures.

In addition, the Ministry of Emergency Situations warned the residents of the region about severe frosts.

-Attention! Cruel frosts will cover the vast territory of Russia

In a very cold air mass from the Kara Sea over the north-western regions of Siberia…in the next 5-7 days it will cause abnormally cold weather.

In the Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansiysk districts, the temperature can drop to -40 …- 45°C. In the Krasnoyarsk Territory, -43 …- 48°C, in the north of the central regions – up to -53°C. Negative temperature anomaly will reach 10-15 degrees.

Over the snow-covered areas of Siberia, a sedentary anticyclone is transformed into an even colder one, the continental one – over almost all of Eurasia, a huge territory. Storm warning on severe frosts in Siberia is announced before January 24. Anomalously cold weather will affect all adjacent subjects in the Urals, Central Asia and the Far East.

In the Tomsk, Novosibirsk, Kemerovo regions and in the Altai on January 19-24, the temperature will drop to -30 …- 35°C, in places to -40 …- 45°C. In the Perm Territory, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk regions, anomalously cold weather is expected with an average daily temperature of 7-10 degrees below the norm. In the Khabarovsk and Primorye Territories severe Siberian frosts will come with a strong wind.

  1. Ok that means it will take about 10 to 14 days for the coldest of the arctic air to return to the USA. When that happens the flow usually becomes more zonal (West to East) over the USA during this time as the polar vortex is in the other side of the world over Asia. Hence, it will take awhile for the bitter cold to return and move far to the south again. That means a relatively milder pattern for areas further south the next 10 to 14 days as this pattern won’t allow for extreme cold to move too far south.

  2. Here in Central Russia this winter has been generally very mild. Alaska and Moscow seem to be two narrow sectors of the Northern Hemisphere, where the frosts has been rare since the start of the season. But today I felt cruelty of wind chill when I walked only 15 minutes from the railway station to my apartment (-9C, felt like -18C).

  3. If a HIGH Pressure builds over SOUTHERN SWEDEN, the east wind will then come from Siberia, since the wind blows clockwise around a High in the Northern Hemisphere.
THEN , it would be REALLY, REALLY cold in the UK, with the Siberian wind.negating the warmth of the Gulf Stream on Western Europe.
it is MINUS 66 CELSIUS in Siberia…..so imagine the WIND FROM THERE ?
