Dark Winter – How the Sun is Causing a 30-Year Cold Spell

“What we’re really looking at is a repeat of the Dalton Minimum, a solar sunspot minimum that occurred between 1793 and 1830,” says John L. Casey’s new book, Dark Winter: How the Sun is Causing a 30-Year Cold Spell.

“In Dark Winter, Casey asks “Will we also experience volcanic activity that will add to the solar cooling?” and the answer, given the fifty active volcanoes around the world, is that “We should expect to deal with multiple geological disasters, including volcanoes and earthquakes, during the next solar hibernation.” We have in fact already entered that “hibernation.”

  1. So since the earth is and has been in a cooling trend for the past twelve years….
We now only have 18 years till things warm up again, right?
    Please say “right”.

    • I don’t think so. I think this is the beginning of our descent into a little ice age, which will transition into a big one.

    • I have switched my sheep herd from warm climate hair sheep to wool sheep and my goat herd to cashmire.

I have the wool to card, spin and weave….

  2. The hell with global warming, so long as no more 90F days in NYC, I am happy camper.Time to declare war on urban heat island.Paint the town white or something.

  3. Is it not too soon to be so precise, stating it’s a Dalton Minimum? As the next two or three sun-spot cycles are recorded we can become more certain of the behaviour of our star; Dalton, Maunder or Ice Age.

  4. remembering back to the small degree of cooling and ice growth and the same bunch of shysters screaming iceage..
and at that time the GM and seriously iffy hybrids crops thanks to Borlaug and his like.
that green revolution that gave us more poisons and dodgy crops.
we have the same devious moneygrubbing big agri at it again, as well as idiots like gates and others who think they can control climate and geo mod themsleves to be “saviour of the planet”
    in their tiny minds anyway:-(
we really better hope it doesnt get cooler than back then or we are back to serious cropping issues.
grasses and stock will manage, if it doesnt get much coooler than then
veg n tree crops etc wont do so well.

  5. The problem with the Dalton minimum is that it was part of an over all climate pattern called the Little ice age that lasted roughly 500 years with a whole bunch of Dalton and Maunder type minimums along the way. We are unlikely to have just a Dalton minimum and then happy warm days are here again for another 208 years. Then there is the prospect of the expected glacial maximum or big ice age setting in for the next 105,000 years.
The world is more on the edge of a knife than most will admit.

  6. Hey Robert,

I buy a lot of all kinds of stuff on Amazon and I would get it through your site if I could, but I can’t find a link, or whatever it’s called. Does this ‘commission’ deal only work on your books?

PS: You’re still my #1 HERO for having this site!

    • Hi Roy,

If you go through this link first, it will make no difference whether you purchase this particular book or something entirely different, I’ll still get a small commission. Thanks for asking. And thanks for the kind words!

  7. No telling how long it will go and it could end two years from now or it go on for 200+ years No telling really.

    • The sun cooling reversal.
      The sun cooling reversal.
      The sun cooling ??

Seems like when the earth is in stress man as well is stressed? WAR and rumors of WAR.
Guess only the reversal will be the linking factor.

Pray for peace and stand strong in your beliefs.

  8. Back in 1989 Theodor Landscheidt forcasted a cooling trend starting in 1990 and reaching a peak in 2030. In the 1990’s he accurately forecasted El Ninos, as well. His work is based on the study of celestial mechanics and how the planets, particularly the Jovian planets, control the weather on the Sun, which in turn dictates our weather.

Respectfully, the scientific community should name the Grand Solar Minimum we entered in 2009, the Landscheidt Minimum, in honor of his pioneering work.

    • I certainly agree. Too bad Anthony has banned the word Landscheidt and L.S. has been promoting “Eddy Minimum” instead.

Landscheidt deserves the credit since he called it in 1989 and was heaped with scorn.

  9. I just followed the link over to Amazon to check out the Dark Winter. As of today, it has only one review, a 2 star review that claims the book is just a re-do of Cold Sun. If someone here has read the book, and that’s not the case, I’m wondering if they could write a review over at Amazon and post a copy here?

  10. I disagree that this book is a repeat of Cold Sun. Casey updates his theories, and discusses what each of us can do to live, not just survive but thrive thru what is coming. I recommend it as a great addition to any LIA library.

  11. The actual question of course is whether the earth will have a minor 30 year cold spell, a return to a meaner nastier “Little Ice Age or the BIG DROP into glaciation.

    A couple points:

FIRST: The Holocene interglacial is now 11,717 years old….. That’s two centuries or so beyond half the present precession cycle (or 23,000/2=11,500). Only one interglacial , MIS-11, since the Mid-Pleistocene Transition has lasted longer than about half a precession cycle. Any hope that the Holocene would go long was shot down by Lisiecki and Raymo in 2005 in their rebuttal of Loutre and Berger, 2003.

SECOND: The Modern Warm Period, less warm then the the Medieval Warm Period, marks the second thermal pulse. There were two thermal pulses (warm periods) in the closest Holocene analog, MIS-11 just before glaciation. Also the Eemian, the interglacial just before the present one, had two thermal pulses before the Big Drop.

THIRD: Solar Insolation is now at the” glacial inception point”:
NOAAs calculations show how close to the Solar Insolation (June 21 insolation minimum at 65N) during the depths of the Wisconsin Ice Age the earth now is:

NOW (modern Warm Period) 476 Wm-2
Depth of the last ice age – around 463 Wm−2
    Holocene peak insolation: 522.5 Wm-2

A fall 2012 paper Can we predict the duration of an interglacial? gives the calculated solar insolation values of several glacial inceptions:
Current value – insolation = 479W m−2 (from that paper)

    MIS 7e – insolation = 463 W m−2,
    MIS 11c – insolation = 466 W m−2,
    MIS 13a – insolation = 500 W m−2,
    MIS 15a – insolation = 480 W m−2,
    MIS 17 – insolation = 477 W m−2

So no matter who you use as a reference, the earth is in the ball park Solar Insolation for glacial inception

Dr. Brown’s comment on ‘strange attractors’ and a bi/tri stable earth climate is worth the read link.

If I interpert what he has said correctly, line up the ‘Forcings’ (I really hate that word) in the correct fashion and the earth tips from interglacial to glacial.

The Dansgaard-Oeschger events during full glaciation where the earth warms up to close to interglacial temperatures suggests that Dr. Brown is correct.

  12. What I think is fascinating, who knows where this potential cooling cycle will lead us. We could be on the cusp of an historic time of major change. There is an emotional factor here, that we are possibly really in a climate September, and perhaps only a few realize it. You have to take a pause to appreciate the poignancy of it.

    • Since I am old, have no children, and at this point am completely disgusted with the PC crowd for push CAGW, I am looking forward to seeing such an historic event as a coming Ice Age.

Remember the transition from Wisconsin to the Holocene happened in three years. With luck the transition will be fast enough to whack some common sense into people and they will toss the snake oil salesmen out.

      • While it is obvious to anyone who studies real science that we are in a cooling trend, not a warming trend, let’s don’t go crazy. No matter how severe this solar minimum, it will take hundreds of years for glaciers to travel from the polar regions and from mountainous areas to more populated latitudes. And the certainty and severity of such events won’t be known in our lifetimes. It may be catastrophic but, the human race will have time to adapt to all but most extreme ‘snowball earth’ event.
