Heavy snow strands 2,000 at Hokkaido airport

Sapporo – About 2.000 passengers were stuck at Hokkaido airport, a key airport, after flight cancellations due to heavy snow.

Some remained stranded for the second day on Monday

Due to heavy 105 flights could not take off, according to Japan Today. The runway was covered with a layer of snow over 20 cm thick.

On Sunday, January 6, even though conditions had improved, all planes in Tokyo and Osaka were filled due to the end of the New Year holidays. Airlines were trying to add additional flights, but most passengers were still waiting. The most desperate preferred to go by train.

Hokkaido is the northernmost island of Japan, the second largest in the archipelago.
