Magnetic North Pole Moving as much as 37 miles per year

Could this be a precursor to a full-fledged magnetic excursion?

Earth’s magnetic north pole has shifted away from Canada and closer to Siberia at a surprisingly rapid pace in recent years, writes Jennifer Leman in Popular Mechanics (May 15, 2020).

James Clark Ross first identified the magnetic pole on the Boothia Peninsula in Canada’s Nunavut territory in 1831, and scientists have been carefully measuring its location ever since.

While the poles have drifted and even swapped places numerous times over the long course of Earth’s history, what’s different is how quickly this shift is happening. From 1999 to 2005, Earth’s magnetic north pole went from shifting 9 miles – at most -each year to as much as 37 miles in a year.

The movement has been so rapid that the British Geological Survey and U.S. National Geophysical Data Center, which update the World’s Magnetic Model, had to accelerate their process in order to keep up.

These shifts have major consequences for global navigation systems  – compasses, ships at sea, smart phones – all are impacted by this magnetic game of tug-o-war.

Could this accelerating movement be a precursor to a full-fledged magnetic excursion? I have no idea. However, magnetic reversal or not, researchers from U.K. and Denmark say they’ve uncovered the reason for the mysterious movement: Two writhing massive blobs on molten iron in Earth’s outer core.

The researchers paper appeared in the May 15 issue of Nature Geoscience.

  1. That would more indicate that the planet is flipping and we would need to change the latitude markers of our planet.
The weather certainly is getting more rain and chaotic.
Sort of explains some polar heating events happening.
Should know by the differences of light and dark changes in the current latitudes as it would change in regions.

  2. This is old-school-theory ! The molten iron core of the earth is an assumption which is highly questionable .It is more likely that below a solid shield of a maximal thinkness of aroung 1000 kms there exists only plasma and that the magnetism of the earth is caused by electrical currents in our planet and its vicinity dominated by the suns activity . Whats the influence of the galactic plane on the position of the earth vice-versa and its magnetic fields ? Anybody who is able to come forward with a reasonable explanation is very welcome .

    • I have been getting fantastic results on modelling the Sun’s orbital gases compressing and rotating our orb as they coarse past at incredible velocity.
If we were lined up with the Sun’s Orbit in rotation, our planet would take 84 days to be one year of orbit instead of 365 days.
      Real cool stuff!

    • This makes no sense. If this were the case then Venus would have a strong magnetic field as well. Yet it has only a weak one generated by the dense atmosphere – not the planets core.

Call me crazy, but I sincerely believe that our planets core remains molten only because of the planets size and more importantly, because of its large moon that tugs on the core keeping it from cooling as Venus’ and Mars’ cores did.

This is supported by the fact that the tidal forces of Jupiter and Saturn on their larger moons keep water within the ice moons from freezing.

  4. Looks to me like the North Magnetic Pole just moved back over to where it’s “supposed to be”… very near the Geographic North Pole.
Except… Like the North Magnetic Pole, the North Geomagnetic Pole attracts the north pole of a bar magnet and so is in a physical sense actually a magnetic south pole. Just like the country of Brazil, which was named after the nut – the opposite of what one would expect… in the short term.
In the long term… the magnet and the nut were both “invented or existed” long before the country or the earthly Geographic North Pole… like by possibly a thousand trillion years depending on which galaxy you start marking time from;)

The North Pole, also known as the Geographic North Pole or Terrestrial North Pole, is defined as the point in the Northern Hemisphere where the Earth’s axis of
rotation meets its surface.. which now coincidentally happens to be very near the earth’s North Magnetic Pole.
Looks to me like all is coming right with the “it’s a cycle” electroverse again as, just like this site and your books explain. It’s an “Ice Age Now” kinda world, at
least around here 90% of the time… and eugenics/natural selection and high cosmic ray mutations seem to work over and over too.

  5. Wouldn’t you expect and electromagnetic wave to follow a wave pattern similar to the generating AC? The shift is obviously not linear (and you shouldn’t expect it to be) .

  6. The whole “molten iron in Earth’s outer core” is just a theory right? Its tiring to hear these and other (eg. evolution) theories constantly touted as facts.

    • Yes. Molten metal loses it’s magnetism at it’s “Curie Point”, which is 948ish° Kelvin for iron.

There are two types of people, those who can extrapolate from incomplete data

The research I’m reading is incomplete, they’re probably not applying it to something on a solar system sized scale.

The Earth’s core is probably molten plasma. Plasma magnetism can rotate wildly unless it has an external stabilizing force. For Earth, the stabilizing force is that large ball of plasma in the sky. When the Sun’s magnetic field is reduced, the Earth’s magnetic field also fluctuates.

Per the image above, Magnetic North was stable during the 70’s and 80’s. we know this was a period of high solar activity, this stabilized Magnetic North, almost locking it in over Canada, eh. From 1994 on, we know that solar activity was reduced, and it’s been reduced even further since then. Look how far Magnetic North has moved… The Sun’s magnetic field is collapsing. Earth’s magnetic field will reverse. It will happen soon. It won’t be pretty.

  7. Just a simple distance comparison; the change from 1980 to 2000 (two decades) turns into twice that distance from 2000 to 2019 (roughly two decades), so it looks to me like the change is accelerating at double-time. It also appears to be exponentially increasing (picking up speed) since things are increasing at double-time. I hope this really does translate into some sort of catastrophe; about the only thing that might help to end the absolute insanity occurring around the planet is a major E.L.E. The ‘sheeple’ that surround me sure don’t show any signs of coalescing to quell the political insanity. I rooting for it!

  8. I’d like to point out that the records start at about 71 degrees north latitude and are closer to the axis north in the last 5 years than any other time in the record

one could interpret that as greater stability

  9. I am wondering what effects this may have on volcanic activity considering the proximity of the Siberian magnetic anomaly to the Siberian traps eruption site and also the polar extension of the mid Atlantic rift fault. Basaltic magma has an iron content of up to 12% in the case of Hawaiian basalt. Wouldn’t iron rich magma align itself with magnetic lines of flux within the earth in addition to being influenced by rotation and thermal anomalies?

  10. the blob theory does explain the magnetic anomaly in the sth oceans though they moved recently as well one is now under africa and the one between sth america and Aus,not sure.
its in the general “spacejunk”graveyard area I gather

    • … maybe along with a few other Immanentization of the Eschaton catastrophes… like how all the Angus are turning into Muscovy Ducks up here and then there’s…
The Bolshevik Revolution Has Entered Stage 3 of the Takeover of the Republic [real-time Historical Excursion]
Personally I think the Magnetic North Pole just made a short excursion down into Canada before making a quick U-ie straight back up to “home plate” again to avoid the next Bolshevik lock down during this GSM.
…also Sas, when are you going to conjure up that other sassy Jeanie S. with the Light Brown Hair again… Jeanie always has the alternative horse sense Mile High Perspective on these matters;).

  11. It’s long overdue. The last magnetic pole swap was over 750,000 years ago, and before that, the poles swapped ends frequently.

The inquiry about what effect it may have on volcanic spots is valid: the lake called Crater Lake in Oregon erupted about 640,000 years ago. That was over 110,000 years after that particular magnetic pole swap.

I don’t have a list of other eruptions, but the very, very active volcano Erta Ale in the Danakil Depression in eastern Africa (Ethioipia, I think) finally filled its caldera in 2016. The earth’s crust there is barely 8 (EIGHT) miles thick. Erta Ale sits on the east African rift zone, which is the southern part of a rift zone that starts up in western Central Asia, runs south through the Haija Sofia temple in Istanbul and right down into Ethiopia. Because of civil warfare going on, no outsiders like volcanologists can get in there and take measurements and readings on the ougassing or any of the rest of the things that volcanoes do.

Not trying to scare any of you. I doubt that we’ll see any real changes in our lifetimes, but this planet is very much alive and has its own way of doing things. So if the poles finally do swap ends, just be sure that you know which direction is North and which way is South. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. If you know that much, you’re good to go.

  12. “Magnetic North Pole Moving as much as 37 miles per year”

Well is yet an ‘known unknown’ in the climate pot!
Unless you believe that it is all CO2 doing.
Incredibly strong stuff this CO2 moving the poles around and all! :-0

  13. If the North Pole or South Pole should end up exactly over New York City does that mean the residents would be getting smashed by cosmic rays or particles all the time?? That could help most of them a great deal.
