How could a magnetic reversal trigger an ice age?

30  Aug 11 – “New findings point to cosmic rays and the sun — not human activities — as the dominant controller of climate on Earth,” says this article by Lawrence Solomon.

“The research, published with little fanfare this week in the prestigious journal Nature, comes from über-prestigious CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, one of the world’s largest centres for scientific research involving 60 countries and 8,000 scientists at more than 600 universities and national laboratories,” Solomon continues.

CERN built the Large Hadron Collider

“CERN is the organization that invented the World Wide Web, that built the multi-billion dollar Large Hadron Collider, and that has now built a pristinely clean stainless steel chamber that precisely recreated the Earth’s atmosphere.”

In this stainless steel chamber, 63 CERN scientists from 17 European and American institutes have demonstrated that “cosmic rays promote the formation of molecules that in Earth’s atmosphere can grow and seed clouds, the cloudier and thus cooler it will be.”

Cosmic rays seed cloud formation

In other words, cosmic rays seed cloud formation, just as the Danish physicist Henrik Svensmark has long postulated.

“Because the sun’s magnetic field controls how many cosmic rays reach Earth’s atmosphere (the stronger the sun’s magnetic field, the more it shields Earth from incoming cosmic rays from space, the sun determines the temperature on Earth,” Solomon explains.

And here’s where magnetic reversals come into the picture.

You see, not only does the sun’s magnetic field shield us from cosmic rays; the earth’s magnetic field – the magnetosphere – also shields us from these energetic subatomic particles. The stronger the earth’s magnetic field, the greater the protection. The weaker the field, the less protection.

During a magnetic reversal our magnetosphere disappears

Prior to previous geomagnetic reversals, the earth’s magnetic field strength declined to about 15 percent of normal before suddenly reversing. During the reversal, scientists believe that magnetic field strength dropped to zero, thus disabling our protective  shield.

With no shield, huge amounts of cosmic rays would have have rained down on our planet, thereby seeding the clouds (just as CERN suggests), leading to vast amounts of precipitation, cooler temperatures, and thence to an ice age.

Magnetic field strength is declining rapidly

The earth’s magnetic field strength has declined by about two thirds during the past 2,000 years. Unfortunately, the rate of decline is picking up: Magnetic field strength has declined about five percent in the past 100 years alone. (Not by Fire but by Ice, p 190.)

This increase in the speed of the decline is worrisome enough. But just this year, the British Geological Survey (BGS) admitted that we may now be headed for a magnetic reversal.

The South Atlantic Anomaly is growing and spreading westwards from South Africa as the Earth’s internal magnetic field rapidly weakens in this region, says the BGS. “This may be early evidence of a forthcoming reversal in the direction of the Earth’s internal magnetic field.”

The BGS is so concerned about our weakening magnetic field that they’ve opened an observatory on South Georgia Island to track the latest developments.

If CERN and the BGS are correct – and I think they are – then we’re in for some tough times ahead.

We need to prepare for an ice age

At least seven magnetic reversals during the past 400,000 years can be correlated with glaciation. (Not by Fire but by Ice, p 198) To think it won’t happen again just because we humans now inhabit the planet would be wishful thinking.

Forget all this talk about global warming. We need to prepare for an ice age.

I fear that the next ice age has already begun. Look at this headline: “India – Record snowfall revives 2,000 glaciers.” I’m guessing that your regular media outlets never bothered to mention this.)

  1. Could possible magnetic reversals be part of (or caused by) the AMT (Angular momentum Theory) of the Solar barycenter being modulated by the large planets orbits, and hence a possible cause of the solar activity and spot level. The graphs from the AMT modulations seem to fit well with isotope levels in the paleoclimate records.
see http://www.landscheidt.info/ Theres something in this.

    • I read the link http://www.landscheidt.info and found that 178 year cycles makes sense. I am not a scientist (I am a retired engineer) so I simply use my head and try to understand other people’s work.
The problem is, we are at the very END of the warm period that lasted approx. 11500 years and we are also entering into 178 year cooling cycle. Add to it magnetic reversal (with consequences) and you get the goddamn BIG FROZEN PICTURE.
No wonder they don’t want people to know this.
Do you really believe that Al Gore doesn’t know this? I am sure he does.
He was probably paid big money to spread the controversy about global warming with the great help from influential friends.

  2. This is a theory that needs to be tested Robert.

It’s so obvious that I can’t imagine that they needed all that circus to demonstrate that. Do someone remember a device called Wilson’s chamber? It was used in the old time of atomic physic to see the particules path. When particules go thru the chamber a path of droplet is created so we can see the path of the particule. It’s know since nearly 100 years! And they just ‘discover’ that this can seed cloud! Wow!

Do I’m surprised of this idiocy, No. We live on a planet where so called ‘scientist’ beleive that an increase of 0,000112% of the CO2 proportion of the atmosphere will cause a Venus like oven climate…

An anemic solar activity, an anemic solar field a dying earth magnetic field. We are on the very edge of a climatic cliff… Their CO2 will frost. LOL

  4. Here is an alternative view on the established convection theory of the Earth’s core; Magnetic reversals can happen with great rapidity and this can be seen in ancient lava flows. Here is an extract from an article by scientist J. Marvin Herndon and his ideas on how the Earth’s core functions ………. ‘On January 27, 2009, I submitted a brief but important scientific communication to Physical Review Letters which demonstrated that convection is physically impossible in the Earth’s fluid core because: (1) The core is too bottom-heavy due to compression by the weight above; (2) The core-bottom cannot remain hotter than the top, as required for convection, because the core is wrapped in an insulating blanket; and, (3) The ‘Rayleigh Number’ has been wrongly applied to justify core-convection. I suggested instead that the geomagnetic field is produced by Elsasser’s mechanism operating in the nuclear georeactor sub-shell. Earth’s fluid core comprises about 30% of the mass of the planet; the nuclear georeactor is only one ten-millionth as massive, meaning that disrupted convection in the georeactor could lead to very rapid changes, including rapid reversals of the geomagnetic field. Think of it this way: the direction and speed of a child’s tiny, self-moving toy train can be changed much more rapidly with far less force than that of the longest and heaviest, fully loaded, full-size freight train. From ancient lava flows, scientists have recently confirmed evidence of episodes of rapid geomagnetic field change – six degrees per day during one reversal and another of one degree per week – were reported. The relatively small mass of the georeactor is consistent with the possibility of a magnetic reversal occurring on a time scale as short as one month or several years. The recently observed more-rapid-than-usual movement of the North magnetic pole toward Siberia is thought by some to suggest that a reversal is imminent, although there is great uncertainty.’

  5. if our magnetic shield drops were also likely to cop Gamma etc I wonder if? the speciation in plants and animals as well as humankind may have got a kickstart from just such an event in ages past. they use radiation to mutate plants for the supposedly non? gmodofied Clearfield products right now. and china/ japans been doing just that for some time also.

  6. The following link is well worth reading. The correlations are stunning. Note also the 145 million year periodicity relating to the proximity of the solar system to galactic arms and the 10 degree Kelvin amplitude of temperature modulation also based on this cosmic ray/clouds model. Of course falling magnetic field strengths of Sun and Earth also reduce the electric currents being coupled into the surface layers of the oceans from solar flare currents which are proportional to the product of these two field strengths.

  7. ice age could be close, notice how many records for cold temperature in so many places have been broken this year only? Even Europe is not so hot during summer……

  8. How could anyone fault Al Gore for spreading his gospel? You have to remember he, also, claimed to have started the internet – world wide web – so which source do you wish to believe, CERN or Big Al? Seriously, the less people are prepared for an ice age, the greater the die off of the race, and isn’t that really what TPTB seem to want? According to them, the gene pool would do just fine if we had around say, 500 million serfs.

  9. I think you’re close, Robert, in that it is the developing Ice Age itself that triggers Mag Field Reversals, not the reverse. The differential rotational speed of the core vis-à-vis the surface is altered by accumulation of polar ice taking equally distributed water around the Earth and dumping it around the axis of rotation when the Arctic polar sea opens up sufficiently to allow continuos “Ocean Effect” snow to accumulate on its shores. Ewing-Donn had the open Arctic – Ice Age relationship down pat 60 years ago!

The core today is now rotating faster than the surface. When that changes (and it is beginning to do so! q.v. FAQ 16 on colderside.com), field reversal results and the rotor-stator relationship is exchanged. Your Ice Age prediction is already underway!!!

  10. Thankyou very much for keeping us up to date on these crazy times living on our “big girl”, i found your site after doubting what we were being told in Christchurch by our geology tech’s. After reading your site i happened to see a program on National Geo channel talking of reversal and how Mammoths were found in the Arctic and had died of old age not snap frozen like others found elsewhere. So it makes sense to me as they would’ve been at the south pole before the shift. My real worry is the waves that would be caused by a fast shift of our mass?? I live in NZ south island and we have had some really crazy times lately ie Christchurch massive eq’s one of which they dont talk about- 7.1 followed by a 7.3 20seconds later but its never discussed ? Why hide these facts if all is above board~~ Arohanui (biglove)

  11. Even during a time between reversals, all it would take would be a major GCR burst during a weak solar cycle such as the current one, and, that’s all she wrote.

  12. I live in Beirut which has rain free summers. It is very rare that it rains in summer. Just this summer it rained three times before September started.
