Major snowfall in Reno, Nevada

More than 36,000 lose power, many schools closed, many downed trees.

Snowfall ranged from 6 to about 18 inches. The deepest Reno-area snow fell in Stead, Panther Valley and Cold Springs.

Temperatures are expected to dip down to the 20s (F) or lower.

Chains and snow tires are required on many Tahoe-area roads.

It was the first major snowfall in Reno NV in two years

  1. That snowstorm blanketed a healthy swath of the Sierra Nevada mountains from Lake Tahoe south to Mammoth, where they reported 20 inches at the base and 40 inches at the summit is the settled depth from two storms a week apart. Clearly, the center of the storm passed right over Lake Tahoe, and they linger for days. Unconfirmed word on the street is that they got 4 feet of snow somewhere there with the previous storm alone. If this continues, on a year like this they can truly get ridiculous amounts of snow.
