The last time Mt. Popocatepetl erupted was in 2001, when more than 41,000 people were evacuated from the area, says John Search of volcanolive.com.
“The volcano presents a great hazard to Mexico City and to other nearby cities and towns from a possible major volcanic eruption,” says Search.
