Mount St. Helens Rumbling

40 Earthquakes Since New Years Day – Aftershocks continue every few hours.

The most powerful earthquake, a magnitude 3.9 around midnight, was felt in Portland but there were no reported injuries or damage.

Since then there have been 16 more earthquakes averaging about every half hour.

According to, these earthquakes appear to be both from regional stress (i.e. not related to the volcano) and from the volcano itself, and are not indicative of an impending eruption.
