New Zealand – Snow and ice close South Island highways

Wintry blast leaves major South Island state highways shut.

26 Sep 2019 – In Southland, State Highway 94 (SH94 from Te Anau to Milford closed due to avalanche risk and snow fall.

SH87 is shut from Outram to Kyeburn in Otago due to snow and there is no detour.

State Highway 1 (SH1) from Dunedin to Waitati closed on Thursday morning due to black ice.

  1. These are alpine passes. Nothing unusual this time of year and sometimes closer to summer too. Results from a southerly weather system. Can be vicious but of itself not indicating anything climate shifting.

  2. that raved up hot air over antarctica was a fizzer
    it did show a temp of over 2c briefly but we’re talking highest level nullschool maps go to..at surface and elsewhere they were still the minus down to 76cbelow zero C
    a couple of late n nasty cold fronts in eastern aus,,maybe ?…could be attributed to them.but hard to tell from usual cold weather anyway
