Last night’s eruption not a threat to aviation, says Iceland Met Office

Downgrades volcano alert level from red to orange

Says that the small eruption, which started last night north of the Vatnajokull glacier, is not producing detectable amounts of ash and is not a threat to aviation.

However, it did maintain some less extensive restrictions.

“A 3 nautical mile radius and 5,000 foot altitude immediate safety restricted flight area around the volcanic activity set by the Icelandic Transport Authority remains is effect,” the Met Office said in a statement.

  1. Papua New Guinea’s Mount Tavurvur volcano has erupted – residents have been advised to remain indoors to avoid falling ash. There are flight diversions, as well.
