Obama Wages War on U.S. Energy

By Alan Caruba

The Iowa caucuses tell us that the campaign season is now upon us. While we focus on the Republican candidates, there will likely only be one Democratic candidate for president. If you still need a reason to defeat Obama in 2012 consider his administration’s intense effort to deprive America of the energy it needs to function and compete in the world.

If a foreign nation had launched an attack on America to destroy its coal-fired plants, to shut down its coal mines, and to thwart its ability to drill for oil and natural gas, we would be at war with it.

Obama is at war with America. Between the waste of billions squandered on “Green” energy and the attacks on all aspects of the energy industries in America, the one reason to defeat Obama is your ability to turn on the lights, turn on your computer, and ensure that American business and industry has the energy necessary to exist and compete.

Just try to imagine what your life would be without adequate, reliable electricity.

As a Wall Street Journal editorial recently warned, “Last week the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission convened a conference on the wave of Environmental Protection Agency rules that are designed to force dozens of coal-fired power plants to shut down…despite warnings from expert after expert, including some of its own, the FERC Commissioners refuse to do anything about this looming threat to electric reliability.”

The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) warned that “Environmental regulations are shown to be the number one risk to reliability over the next one to five years.”

The editorial noted that “For the first time in U.S. history, net coal capacity is in decline. On top of 38 gigawatts of generation that is already being run below normal levels or slated for early retirement, NERC predicts another 36 to 59 gigawatts will come offline by 2018, depending on the ‘scope and timing’ of EPA demands. That could mean nearly a quarter of all coal-fired capacity.”

It is coal-fired plants that currently provide fifty percent of all the electricity generated in America! The EPA is feverishly trying to force a quarter of that capacity offline. Why? Because the EPA claims that these plants are “polluting” the air. The air in America has never been cleaner. The EPA demand for cleaner air is a bludgeon being used to deprive America of its ability to function.

America has more than 497 billion short tons of recoverable coal (not counting Alaska) or nearly three times as much as Russia, which has the world’s second largest reserve. According to the Institute for Energy Research, “America’s recoverable coal resources are bigger than the five largest non-North American countries’ reserves combined,” i.e., Russia, China, Australia, India and the Ukraine.

The Obama administration delayed the proposed Canadian Keystone XL pipeline that would provide more oil for America’s needs. It imposed an illegal moratorium on oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. While China drills for oil off the coast of Cuba, access to offshore oil is restricted on both the East and West coasts of America and, of course, in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. According to the Department of Interior’s 1987 resource evaluation of ANWR’s Coastal Plain, there is a 95% chance that a ‘super field’ with 500 million barrels would be discovered.

Meanwhile, when combined with resources in Canada and Mexico, the total recoverable oil in North America exceeds 1.7 trillion barrels! That is more than the entire world has used in the past 150 years and sufficient to fuel the present needs in the United States for the next 250 years!

The same holds true for natural gas, often accessed by “fracking” a safe process that has been in use for sixty years. The total amount of recoverable natural gas in North America is approximately 4.2 quadrillion (4,244 trillion) cubic feet. That’s enough to last for the next 175 years at current rates of consumption.

In Durban, South Africa the enemies of the United States and all industrialized Western nations recently gathered at yet another United Nations conference on climate change. Its major objective was to deter energy use by Western industrialized nations or, more accurately, to require that the UN receives billions in return for allowing it.

The global warming claim on which the EPA is basing its horrendous rules and regulations is a complete and total lie. There is no human-caused global warming.

The Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow (CFACT) attended the conference to monitor its mischief and reports that “Obama and his fellow climate travelers are trying to do an end run around the Senate and stick America with the bill. They are creating side agreements that give them much of what they want from a treaty. These side agreements will not come home for a vote in the Senate or other national legislatures. Previous U.S. Senates have refused to ratify UN climate treaties such as the Kyoto Protocols that called for limits on greenhouse gases.

Global warming claims, the basis for EPA rule-making regarding emissions, have all been refuted and debunked.

Antarctic sea ice is at a near-record extent and is expanding; so too for Arctic ice. The polar bear population is thriving. Sea levels are actually dropping. Global temperatures have been holding steady for a decade and the Earth has been in a cooling cycle since 1998. The frequency of U.S. hurricanes has declined along with the frequency of tornadoes. There is no evidence the Earth is experiencing unusual weather. This list of climate lies is a very long one.

It is all connected, from the halls of the United Nations to the EPA and other U.S. departments working ceaselessly to deprive America of the energy it needs for its very survival.

Obama and his administration must be decisively defeated in November 2012 if the republic is ever to be empowered to pull back from the brink of its destruction.

  1. Obama seems to faithfully follow the agenda in the book, written by his science czar Holdren, to “de-develop America” in the process of redistributing our wealth to the less developed nations of the 3rd world. They are pursuing a kind of globalist “social justice.”
We are being “equalized” with the 3rd world quite deliberately.

    • I agree, Leon. I find it very difficult to believe people do not see what is an obviously planned agenda. The transfer of wealth away from America has been going on for a LONG time, and those behind it all don’t even hide it too much. You can just read their own stuff and figure it out. … OH YEAH! Most people don’t, or won’t, read their stuff, so are stuck in the dark. So the perpetrators get away with it over and over again.

      • I agree with you. However, the reason people refuse to see the obvious is psychological. People believe that there is little they can do to truly effect any meaningful, positive, change. Thus, they bury their heads in the sand in the hope that the ‘scary stuff’ will simply go away.

Therefore, to change this scenario we, as a Nation, need to once again believe that our destiny is truly our own and that we can craft a government that answers directly to the people. How we are to accomplish this is the crux of the dilemma.

If you can find, and implement, a swift, viable, and ready solution you will be heralded as a National Hero for centuries. Otherwise, we are doomed to the slow, arduous task of deprogramming and reeducating our families, friends, neighbors and colleagues.

If we fail in this task the Republic, as we have known it, will be supplanted totally by an ‘elected’ dictatorship chosen from a perpetual ruling class… We are presently upon the cusp of such governance.

      • Yes like Bill Gates will give 3 million for aids???? Where??? But he won’t help his fellow americans!CNN goes after the “slavery on chocolate” why? Let them do their own thing there if they want to! it’s all about show, plastic people, hollywood and greed
Nobody feels sorry for someone else anymore, there is always a hidden agenda and how to enhance my image.

  2. oddly enough…they pulled the ethanol tax..and subsidy i think?
cant see many able to run heaters and cook or see using ethanol though

    • The did away with the Ethanol Subsidy. So, there is now little incentive to incorporate 10%+ ethanol into our gasoline.

On a recent trip I was able to purchase, for the first time in many years, gasoline that was genuine 100% gasoline and was being advertised and sold heavily as such. The cost was .09 per gallon less than nearby competing stations which sold only ethanol added fuel. And, believe it or not, my vehicle ran better and my gas mileage increased by about 2 miles per gallon. Hurray!

      • I’ve been looking for 100% gasoline for ages. Remember when the environmentalists demanded that gasoline be adulterated with that MBTE crap? A decade later, they were running around, suing oil companies because the MBTE they forced them to add was contaminating ground water. Gotta love those unintended consequences.

  3. I find it interesting that Gore, Obama, and the “warmists” in general oppose ocean oil production, especially in the Channel Islands area of California off the coast of Santa Barbara. There is a massive natural oil seep there that pollutes the oceans, the beaches, and the air. Drilling for oil there, whether from new platforms, or slant drilling from existing platforms or from land, would relieve the pressure and stop or dramatically reduce this natural pollution source. And, the oil recovered would help the U.S. become more energy independent. But then, this issue isn’t about logic or science, or common sense, its about politics that help certain people or groups steal from the American people while impoverishing them.

Here are two URLs about the Channel Island problem. The first one is about the facts. The second one is about the solution.

  4. O.B.A.M.A. is One Big A$$ Mistake America. If we are to survive, we must correct this mistake in November of 2012. Otherwise, Obammunism will be the ruin of us all.

  5. I agree with Leon; Holdren is a dangerous radical.

This is one of Alan Caruba’s most eloquent posts. I have no doubt that Obama will be defeated, but let us only hope that our next president does not buy into the global warming scam (and I am not at all sure that the majority of GOP candidates are not, in fact, closet climate alarmists). This great country can obviously be energy independent in very short order; let’s make it happen!

  6. There can be no justification in making fuel from food – EVER.

Gasoline can be replaced by gas in most private use vehicles with a significant reduction in emissions and at a known cost at the production stage which is far less than any of the alternatives. The gas required to power the vehicle fleet of the world is well known and easily supplied.

With an easily affordable reduction in emissions that is cheap with minor modifications to new vehicle and available as a retrofit why aren’t the greens and so-called “green” governments simply mandating that all new vehicles must run on gas instead of gasoline ?

This alone would achieve more than all the climate conferences and the billions wasted in Europe have achieved.

If Europe had spent the money they’ve wasted so far on renewable energy in improving existing thermal power stations and switching to gas they would have actually achieved significant reductions in CO2 emissions rather than increasing them – Not my words but a report by a Eurpoean investigation.

    • Yes we can switch our automobiles from gasoline to LP gas. However, have you ever driven an LP powered vehicle? The difference in power is noticeable.

In the area where I live a nearby University tried to power their Buses and work vehicles with LP. We have many large hills which results in constant changes in elevation. The buses found it difficult to negotiate these changes effectively. So, the decision was made to switch back to gasoline (diesel.)

But, I do believe that a more effective power derivation can be achieved from LP if we were to apply our best technological minds to the task. In the present situation the petroleum industry has more to gain by selling gasoline and diesel fuel as compared to creating truly effective LP vehicles. When the sale of gasoline and diesel declines due to a prohibitive cost, then and only then will the focus genuinely switch to refining LP powered vehicle technology; as well as free standing electric vehicle technology.

      • Odumbo regime has refused to allow gas production too. No oil. No gas. No coal. No nuke. No firewood. Odumbo ran a big TV ad campaign yesterday bragging about Solyndra. He thinks scamming us out of half a billion dollars was a success.

  7. Yes it is a foreign power, its the British – Prince Philip founded the World Wild Life fund. What about the BP (British Petroleum) oil disasters – and the Queen being the biggest Shareholder of Rio Tinto. British Free Trade which is Globalization has destroyed the USA’s economy. And Obama is an agent of the British System, that’s why he has spent so much time with the Royal Family. It is the British.

  8. How is that we can be an oil producing nation, that consistently produces a yearly surplus of finished product that we sell on the world market and yet gas is around 3.50 a gallon?

    • That is simple … The Energy Elite manipulate our markets so that we pay ‘what the market will bear.’ They have Bean Counting Brainiacs who monitor the market 24/7 and know exactly what percentage of our incomes we will part with, in order to give them the highest return for the least amount of product sold. This is done in every industry.

We pay more attention to the price when the commodity is gasoline because, due to our mobile life styles, we expend a larger percentage of our income for this one product. A great many people pay more each month for fuel than they do for food.

Another example: The cost of beer and tobacco have gone up substantially, yet few complain in any meaningful way. At the same time the cost of food has risen dramatically… And more people globally are becoming angry and vocal about the increased cost.

We will only see cheap petroleum products again when the Fuel Meisters decide that the United States is in need of economic growth. This will happen when sales of the product decline to the point where they are forced to grow our incomes so that we can afford to increase our purchases of fuel.

The ‘good old days’ of oil producers selling at any cost, to make a buck, are over. Those who control the oil supply know that ultimately it is a finite commodity. They work feverishly to extract every cent from the product before the product is used up or rendered obsolete.

Those who control the Oil, control the World… In the final analysis it is about the control of global economics.

    • we pay $ 1.50 a “litre” in Oz, last I knew one gets a bit more then 4 litres a gallon, you are doing it cheap

    • we pay $ 1.50 a “litre” in Oz, last I knew one gets a bit more then 4 litres a gallon, you are doing it cheap

    • Graham, Sonya is correct! It is “Silly” to think the Brits stole our Gold. Everyone know that all of our Gold Reserves have been stolen by ‘Space Aliens.’ LoL LoL

  9. There is no we or our when it comes to this prison colony. The people of this are not in control, the elections are a farce. 911 truth.

  10. Hi Sonya,
The British Stole all of the US gold through illegal gold trades through the London Gold Exchange. The London Gold Exchange was opened and was illegal under the Bretton Woods Agreement. Yet the British did it anyway, and this ultimately lead to the criminal world of floating currencies, that destroyed Mexico and Soon the US. The USA was founded on Protectionism and National Banking, based on the Nation State. Not the British Free Trade Model, where Multinational Corporations and International Financiers are more powerful than countries and hold them hostage for loads of Worthless Toilet Paper (Money). There is plenty of evidence its the British. Open your eyes.

  11. I’m not American so can someone please tell me what the difference between gas and gasoline is because in england we call it petrol and deseil (you know there proper names).

    • “Gasoline” is the refined liquid fuel.

“Gas” is the term we often use for natural gas (not a liquid, but a gaseous substance).

  12. Hello kuddlesworth,

Yes, the use of the word ‘gas’ in the United States can be confusing to many. For example, in the everyday American vernacular gas can and does refer to flatulence, gasoline, natural gas, and liquified propane (LP Gas.) Examining the context is the best way to differentiate the usage. To say, “I had a bad case of gas” implies flatulence. To say, “I put gas in my car” usually means the fuel tank had gasoline added to it…. unless one is joking. In which case, to say, “I put gas in the car” could mean that the speaker had a bout of flatulence and others should avoid getting into the automobile until the air has cleared. LoL

In the Southern Region of the United States Propane is often referred to as ‘Bottle Gas’ since it is contained in metal cylinders or ‘bottles.’ For most Southerners, this is easy to understand, since it is well known that gasoline is not sold in ‘bottles.’

Language is a very interesting thing indeed!

  13. Yes there is an Empire and it is the British Free Trade System, environmental fraud is destroying many nations, not just the USA, they are shutting down power plants and discontinuing agriculture in Australia as well. The imperial bunch is international, Obama is just one of them.

  14. Whether its Democrats or Republicans, they all vote for the same shadow government any way!
Obama has no say he is only the mouth piece of those standing in the shadow.
Is nuclear more greener than coal….off course not!
    Its all about money!!

  15. Folks,

Make no mistake about it, Obama is America’s greatest threat to our way of life. Yes, he must be defeated in the next election. This will not be an easy task especially since the biased/liberal media prefer his policies. It will be a close race just like the last two elections. We need a viable opponent and right now we just do not have that. Maybe an independent like Donald Trump will come to save the day. If he could win, he would be a far better alternative than four more years of the other guy.

  16. Ummm, How about population control! Does anyone stop to think how we will feed 7 Billion people or supply energy for them?

    • Nuclear power can easily power the world, there are Pebble Bed Modular Reactors and Liquid Salt Thorium Reactors under development that are meltdown proof. And if you don’t listen to Environmentalist lies, the waste is not waste and can be recycled, and the high level waste is only dangerous for 50 Years. Why do you think the Globalists want to attack Iran, because a closed Nuclear Cycle is a threat to Global energy control.

      • You can feed the world more than 3 times over just by providing adequate irrigation in Sudan. Overpopulation is a myth. It is just just a management problem and having faith in human goodness.

        • Spot on Graham! Also farmers are subsidised not to produce food. Also since when dose couple need a house that is huge????Simple is best!

  17. There are so many things factually wrong with your viewpoints on climate change and energy, but you are way off the mark on glaciers and Arctic ice “growing” — all are diminishing and it’s all being measured. You don’t have a factual leg to stand on. But just as bad, you claim that Obama is standing in the way of fossil fuel use. The opposite is true. Obama, unfortunately, has opened up land for coal mining and he has approved new drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. He has increased our fossil fuel use, not cut it down. America’s main export is now GAS and OIL. We have so much we are selling it to other countries. The Keystone Pipeline sludge from the tar sands in Canada which is causing cancer up there by the way, is going to be refined in Texas and then exported to South America and China. It’s not even meant to be used here in the U.S.

I don’t know where you get your info, but you need new sources. I heard you on Coast to Coast and was appalled at your lack of knowledge on these subjects, things that everyone else is observing and experiencing and reading, you seem to be completely unaware of. I live in Minnesota and until today — January 11th — we have had steady temps above zero. We are slashing temperature records nearly every day. We have been in the 40s and 50s in January and December this winter, when our normal temps for this time of year would be much, much lower. It’s obvious that we are in the midst of global warming, and if you can’t see that from all the evidence, you should at the very least stop spreading your misinformation around the world and on the radio.
On climate and energy — you literally don’t know what you’re talking about.

    • Shelly,

Please cite your sources. You claim the author hasn’t any idea what he’s talking about, yet provide a single link to a reliable and valid peer reviewed source your assertions are based on. Also, the credibility of anyone who states “It’s obvious that we are in the midst of global warming. . .” without being able to cite a single peer reviewed research paper or journal article is suspect.

    • Shelly my dear….
Oh don’t know where to start!!!
Fossil Fuel….incorrect my dear. Hydrocarbons are being generated by our planet as we speak. Have you ever heard about A-biotic oil? The methane on Uranus and Pluto, is that from dinosaurs or fossils? Go and read about A-biotic oil. Please go and check out the solar cycle 24….you do know about this?? Nuclear is by far more damaging than coal fired plants….you know this?? It is all about money my dear!!Or are you one of the brainwashed people believing in hollywood and always vote democrat or republican!! hahahahahahahahahahah wake up people!!!!!!!

    • You can’t just look at the weather in Minnesota and proclaim that we are in the midst of global warming. The world, on average, is cooling, and the ice is growing.

  18. As for fracking — I don’t know what’s safe about polluting the water table with fracking chemicals, to the point where people can ignite their tap water. You have a weird definition of the word “safe”.

Oh yeah, and all those earthquakes in Ohio — yeah, that’s totally normal.

  19. Wanted to comment on Shelly Leit’s comments. Shelly, I too do believe in global warming. It is obvious. However, not anthropogenic, that is, human caused. The world has gone through warming and cooling cycles through eons of time. CO2 is breathed out by you and me and everyone else every day. It is not a pollutant! My wife and I are leaving in two days for our annual visit to Wisconsin for a “taste of real winter” as I like to call it, and I was amazed at the real possiblity of being there in January without snow on the ground. Just not the same without snow!! Thankfully it seems that there is snow there now, albeit the first “real” snow of the season according to her sister.

  20. It sucks we are screwed and there is not a darn thing that can be done about it without starting a major war against the government.

    • War against the government? USA is not Lybia and so also Europe!! War against the government sounds absolutely foolish to me!!
To survive what’s coming, one has to be creative, inventive, think ahead and plan to survive!Otherwise you end up running around like a head-less chicken

  21. Germany, Solar Subsidy Sinkhole

As is so often the case in winter, all solar panels more or less stopped generating electricity at the same time. To avert power shortages, Germany currently has to import large amounts of electricity generated at nuclear power plants in France and the Czech Republic. To offset the temporary loss of solar power, grid operator Tennet resorted to an emergency backup plan, powering up an old oil-fired plant in the Austrian city of Graz.

German consumers already complain about having to pay the second-highest electricity prices in Europe.

  22. So much gloom and doom. Regardless of what we do as a nation or as a world the ice will come south. The inter glacial will end and the world will cool. When that happens we will survive just as we did the last time it happened. It will be ugly. It may even be brutal but we will get through it.

  23. This longish comment I just did at hotair and real-science seems on target / topic here. So here it is:

Early on, leaders of the fledgling environut movement openly expressed their true goals, not thinking their statements would ever be repeated by the opposition. Now they’ve clammed up, but their radical goal remains:
“A massive campaign must be launched to de-develop the United States… [we] must design a stable, low consumption economy in which there is a much more equitable distribution of wealth.” -John Holdren (1973), Obama’s Science Czar

It’s no accident that when the price of gas was rising rapidly, O said only that he preferred that it rise more slowly. They want energy prices to rise, to “necessarily skyrocket.” And other than what even they know is a fanciful diversion (green energy), they are adamantly against increasing energy supplies, period. They are trying to engineer a siege — an energy siege — of their own people!
The global warming [fabrication] was the perfect vehicle to work to bring their dream to fruition. They proposed 80% CO2 cuts by 2050; you talk about taking a wrecking ball to civilization. This radical proposal was approved in the House! We were that close to succumbing to the leftist environut agenda!
That’s why it is so upsetting to us when conservatives tow the liberal environut line. Like the “conservative” Michael Gerson. Or, in particular, the inexplicable Huntsman. Or the other R candidates (except Santorum!, Paul) who seem to be “behind the times” as far as representing their own R voters. (Pew poll: only 19% of Rs believe in AGW.)
Rebuttal is simple. There is nothing wrong with the climate, and CO2 has nothing to do with it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WK_WyvfcJyg
    (Also see https://iceagenow.info/2011/12/great-global-warming-swindle/ )

  24. Zimmer-Stucky says the federal government recently opened up more public land for coal mining in the West, despite the lack of need for it in the U.S. where many plants are turning away from the fossil fuel. She says that coal will be exported via cheap rail and then shipped overseas for a huge profit margin for the coal companies.

  25. The parent company of an electric car battery maker that received a $118 million grant from the Obama administration filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Thursday.

New York-based Ener1 said it has been affected by competition from China and other countries.

Ener1 is the third company to seek bankruptcy protection after receiving assistance from the Energy Department under the economic stimulus law.

  26. Spain R.I.P.renewable energy

The Government is halting grants for new renewable energy installations, as part of the cuts to the public deficit, and Minister, José Manuel Soria, said energy policy cannot be an exception. Such grants cost the Government 6,409 billion last year.

Spain must remain competitive on the global market. Our electricity, he said, costs on average more than that of France, one of our principal competitors, and this is hurting our economy

Spain has an accumulated “tariff deficit” of 24 billion euros. This deficit is the difference between what electricity has cost to produce in recent years, and what has been charged to consumers. (4) “Subsidies to renewable energy have caused this gaping hole in the country’s finances”,

    Spain renewable energy jobs

  27. This is actually the most amusing thing I ever read. Fracking is a SAFE process? The quality of the air has never been cleaner? All of you who have enough free time on your hands to conjure up such elaborate and nonsensical stories need to find something to do. EVEN if you believe that burning fossil fuels contributes nothing to global warming or pollutes the environment, it still doesn’t compensate for the fact that these resources are a *relatively* short fix for obtaining energy; a different source of energy will have to be found sooner or later. If renewable energy was actually subsidized like oil industries are, we’d be talking about most of our energy coming from it. Instead, lobbyists have taken control of our government.

Oh god i’m still laughing at the fact that you call fracking a safe process. Looking it up for 5 minutes should prove you otherwise, or how about tell that to the many people who have their water contaminated by chemicals?

      • I actually want to apologize, I shouldntve have been so harsh with my comments. But you’re right with that statement, cheap energy does bring prosperity. I just think that another aspect to cheap fuel should also be energy security and we do have abundant reserves of coal and natural gas, but I think that there are definitely alternatives to fossil fuels that are not nearly as pollutant generating and harmful to the environment and people’s health as fracking is. Given the drop in the cost of electricity from renewables, I think it may be soon that it is able to compete effectively with other sources, along with other means such as biofuels, and my personal favorite thorium energy which can easily meet all of our energy needs. These sources can be very long lasting too which is a win-win situation.

        • Only economically strong countries have the money and resources to improve the environment. To be economically strong something in the line of production must be cheap. If the’cheap’ part is labour you have a problem.
Green energy will not create jobs. Only productive good paid jobs can create the environment ( wealthy middle class ) for green jobs.
Obama is killing the middle class. Under Obama you just have kings and serfs.

    • Fracking IS a safe process. It has been used for years. You would be the first to cry if you car runs out of gas and there is no more. We live better than anyone in the world, stop your whining.

  28. Those who believe in global warming, are the same people believing they landed on the moon!!
They are alo the ones that believe America has a democratic system? You vote yes.. but only democrat or republican..and then the CIA stays in full control

  29. Mohamed Nasheed,4th President of the Maldives, resigned following mass-demonstrations.

President Nasheed pledged to set an example by making the Maldives carbon-neutral within a decade by moving to wind and solar power. He argued that the cost of the change would be no higher than what the Maldives already spends on energy.[6] As part of a wider campaign by international environmental NGO 350.org’s campaign publicizing the threats of climate change and its effects on the Maldives, Nasheed presided over the world’s first underwater cabinet meeting on Oct. 17, 2009

  30. Government’s ethanol mandate invites corruption

In 2007, President George W. Bush signed a law declaring 36 billion gallons of ethanol would be used in gasoline by the year 2022.
As a result, each fuel refiner and importer has to meet a quota of “renewable” fuel that must be blended into proper petroleum products. For 2012, EPA decided the total amount needs to add up to 15.2 billion gallons. Companies that can’t meet the target on their own can purchase credits from renewable fuel producers. These credits are available on the EPA Moderated Transaction System, a trading scheme that lets companies that claim an abundance of “green” fuel to rake in the cash. It’s basically a government-run equivalent of the Chicago Climate Exchange that would have sold “carbon credits” had Congress enacted cap-and-trade legislation.
