Paid PR scandal erupts at Wikipedia

History of climate gets ‘erased’ online.

“A Wikipedia trustee and a Wikipedian In Residence have been editing the online encyclopedia on behalf of PR clients,” says this article on “Add the discovery of an SEO business run on the side, and this tempest is out of its teapot.”

This latest scandal brings to mind the Wikipedia administrator accused of re-writing more than 5,000 Wikipedia entries in order to spread the global warming message.

History of climate gets ‘erased’ online,” shouted the headline on
More than 5,000 entries rewritten to hype global-warming agenda

Here are excerpts from that article:

“A new report reveals a British scientist and Wikipedia administrator rewrote climate history, editing more than 5,000 unique articles in the online encyclopedia to cover traces of a medieval warming period – something Climategate scientists saw as a major roadblock in the effort to spread the global warming message.

Recently hacked e-mails from the University of East Anglia’s Climate Research Unit expose a plot to eliminate the Medieval Warm Period, a 400-year era that began around A.D. 1000, the Financial Post’s Lawrence Solomon reports.

The warming period is said to have improved agriculture and increased life spans, but scientists at the center of the Climategate e-mail scandal believed the era undermined their goal of spreading concern about global warming as it pertains to today’s climate.

Instead, the group created a website called

The team consisted of Schmidt, Mike Mann, Eric Steig, William Connolley, Stefan Rahmstorf, Ray Bradley, Amy Clement, Rasmus Benestad and Caspar Ammann.

Solomon revealed that Connolley, one man in the nine-member team who is a U.K. scientist, a software engineer and Green Party activist, took control of Wikipedia’s entries to see that any trace of the true climate history would be erased.

Beginning in February 2003, Connolley rewrote Wikipedia entries on global warming, the greenhouse effect, the instrumental temperature record, the urban heat island, on climate models and on global cooling, according to the report. In February, he began editing the Little Ice Age. By August, he began to rewrite history without the Medieval Warm Period. In October, he turned to the hockey-stick chart.

Through his role as a Wikipedia administrator, Connolley is said to have created or rewritten 5,428 unique Wikipedia entries.

“When Connolley didn’t like the subject of a certain article, he removed it – more than 500 articles of various descriptions disappeared at his hand,” Solomon wrote. “When he disapproved of the arguments that others were making, he often had them barred – over 2,000 Wikipedia contributors who ran afoul of him found themselves blocked from making further contributions.”

Through his control of the Wikipedia pages, Connolley is said to have “turned Wikipedia into the missionary wing of the global warming movement.”

  1. The re-writing of history is a typical feature of totalitarism, like communism or fascism. “There is no need to be concerned about right or wrong in a war, because the winner always will be right, because he is the one to rewrite history”, said Adolf Hitler. After the death of Lenin, five men were ruling Soviet Russia. Stalin eliminated the other four, one by one. And one by one these other four communist leaders were removed from the historical photographs, leaving at the end Stalin as the one and only successor of Lenin, the four others were erased from Soviet history books, like they had never existed. The so-called Green Movement is heading in the same dictatorial way, erasing everything that doesn’t fit in with their delusional ideology.

    • And sheeple-westerners blame China, Russia, North-Korea and others for not embracing “democracy” and/or “free speech”. Game Over!

    • Maybe part of it is living in coal country, but I know of omnly ONE person who believes in man-made global warming these days!

  2. Want to bet that Mr. Connolley does NOT get punished for this? Their is probably a crime that he is guilty of for doing this, But he has the support of big money.

  3. Pay no attention to the Connolleys behind the curtains. I am the great and powerful Global Warming! Get away from that curtain, Toto!

  4. It is good that you put up this story, Robert, because Wikipedia is used by many as a source that you can thrust on.

When people make comments on blogs, I can see there is a lot of use of WP as a reference source, when arguing.

I became suspicious 6 years ago when I investigated this so-called CO2-driven global warming. What they presented as facts, I could find was disputed in other very well documented articles, e.g., the greenhouse effect.

That said, when I look after geographical facts, I use them as a source. But about issues that are in the infected political battlefield, I find them biased.

BTW, no articles in Norwegian MSM about the expanding ice sheet around Antarctica, but a lot of “hulabubala” about the melting ice sheet in the Arctic. Our public broadcaster, NRK, is the most biased. But they are controlled by the government, so there you have it. Among people I know, they are now nicknamed as “Radio Moscow”, because people have alternative information sources, like your website, Robert. People can now sort out “shit from cinnamon”, as we say it here.

    • Yes, I am aware. I also wonder how many of those 5,200 articles were ever corrected to reflect the actual truth. The comment by Kev makes me think that the corrections may have never been made.

  5. I had a brief run-in with Connely on Wikipedia over the topic of chaotic systems.

    The second paragraph starts with:

“Chaotic behavior can be observed in many natural systems, such as weather”

A few years back the original line included “… weather and climate.” and then gave a couple of references.
The one day the words “…and climate.” disappeared.

So I assumed that the references given did not cover climate. So I looked. The reference was specifically about climate!

So a few months later I decided to have a go at editing and added back the words “… and climate.”

Within 12 hours the change had been reversed by Connely.

He said that he had “checked the reference and it wasn’t very good”.
So a reference to a paper referring to chaos in climate which had been perfectly acceptable for several years suddenly was not good enough and had to be removed when it was noted that it actually referred to climate.

Connolly had been suspended for a bit but is obviously loose again.

Wiki often asks for donations. Sorry.

  6. “what happened to Connolley”

He was barred from editing for about 6 months, but he’s back, inevitably. People like him prevent WP from being taken seriously.

  7. We live in a synthetic environment surrounded by faux science and faux history. For a summary of the fake science read, “Becoming A TOTAL Earth Science Skeptic”. For an analysis of the lies of our forced history, visit the “Faux History” tab at FauxScienceSlayer(dot)com. For the reasons that we are forced into this mental prison, read “Fractional Reserve Banking Begat Faux Reality”. Outcome based education has ignorance as it’s desired outcome. Find and share Truth….it is your duty as an Earthling.

  8. Medievil warming period…try searching it,mysteriously unavailable on wik. 9th to 13th century was much warmer than any modern day climate history. With a small world population,no fossil fueled engines or power plants…man obviously wasn’t responsible for that naturally occuring warm up. So the agw THEORY of today remains unproven. I believe the underground agencys of scientific knowledge know of an imminent sharp earth cooldown but by reverse pyschology relay a message of warming which is still positive, happy comfort for oblivious sheeple. Where as cooling projects negative and economy busting frame of mind in sheeple, keep the masses happy don’t spread panic that may be what the elites are projecting, just my opinion.

    • Hi Igor,

I checked. The Medieval Warm Period IS still there.. it’s just that you mis-spelt it whwn searching.

However, with mention of the discredited IPCC and repeated statements that effectively say “warmth that matches or exceeds that of the past decade in some regions, but which falls well below recent levels globally”.. its importance and impact is certainly minimised. Health problems, for example, are simply described as “more complicated” during this period in North America.

      • Hi Caroline in West Virginia. Ok,twas temporary glich on my smart phone browser but there are numerous sources we can all research and make our own opinions about climate physics as it continues to have many faces. Everytime I hike a nearby limestone escarpment,I lift a layer of small lime rock and observe all the ancient fossils that the last iceage meltwater level created 500feet above the current greatlake level. This is a real observation,on the other hand ,its hard to believe massive antarcticas ice gain is being ignored while the same satellite works overtime taking images of the melting arctic.

  9. Screw Wikipedia – I would never go there with their left wing trash agenda. It is much colder now than 1000 years ago. Anything else that says otherwise is a big lie.

  10. Graft and corruption is everywhere. Well, that is human nature, is it not? Especially since the advent of agriculture and the accumulation of wealth. Why should those biased, imperfect people at Wikipedia be any different? Hell, we keep electing and re-electing politicians who lie to us all the time.

  11. Sorry to say this but this GW crap is going to lead to war with lots of bloodshed when the right people wake up.

Prepare yourself for long periods without food when the crap hits the fan to put it nicely and there are electricity shortages.

  12. Look closely at the dateline of the actual article – it’s from 2009. If I remember correctly, Connolly was banned from making any edits to climate entries as a result of the furor. Go skeptics!
