Perth, Australia – Coldest winter in more than 20 years

But headline talks about 2016 being the coldest year in a decade.

“This BOM article minimizes both of those facts to the point where you’d swear it was the hottest instead,” says reader H.B. Schmidt.

  1. “Globally, it was “exceptionally warm” throughout the year.”

2016 was a very strong El Niño year but the author does not mention natural variation as the cause of the spike. The recent plummet in global temperatures shows the La Niña and AMO influences.

    • El Nino / la Nina do not create warmth or cold, they simply redistribute ocean temperatures and increase or decrease upwelling in coastal regions. The two sources of warming are the sun and volcanism. Although the sun far out weighs volcanism, there recently have been estimates of over a million undersea volcanic vents. Who knows, perhaps the unusual warm pacific blob was due to volcanism and not carbon dioxide.

  2. What a start to Twenty Seventeen !!!
One of the coldest that’s been !
    Record lows in Siberia,
    Just like Manitoba !
