Record cold in Siberia – A bone-crushing minus 62C

There’s no evidence of global warming in western Siberia, says the Siberian Times.

The Khanti-Mansi region set a new record with a bone-crushing minus 62C (-79.6F) at the Bolshoe Olkhovskoe oilfield. The village of Kazym in the same district of Beloyarsky hit minus 58C (-72.4F).

“In Nadym, it nudged minus 50C, and all schools were closed. In Tyumen, school classes were cancelled from grades 1 to 9, with minus 36C the trigger for children to stay home.”

“Nizhnevartovsk hit minus 50C, the coldest winter in ten years in the city.

“Such temperatures happen in eastern Siberia, but in the west they are more rare.”

“Meteorologists say it may get colder still.”

  1. Special thanks to all at Iceagenow, keep up the good work!
Merry Christmas and a happy and cool new year 🙂

  2. There is a lot of noise in the media about unusual warmth at the North Pole. Has anyone been investigating what is going on under the water?

    • It’s all above surface, 8 weeks of Meridional jet streams dumping Snow on Greenland in vast quantities, orbiting a blocking high over Scandinavia, and then picking up more water vapour from an open Arctic Ocean and the dumping that snow on Russia, Asia and the Middle East.
The same atmospheric conditions as in Dalton, and during SC20, and in particular to the AD600 Grand Solar Minimum, that Grand Solar minimum caused the European Dark ages, and laid the foundations of the Muslim empire created by the Prophet in the Saudi Peninsular.

This isnt new, its a cycle, and has happend repeatedly within each period of Solar down turn.

    • Ian: I have just checked the Norwegian Weather Service site for the predicted temperatures up to 6th January 2017 and it is showing that the warmest it will be at the North Pole will be -15 Celsius. Is that hot enough to melt snow and ice!? Meanwhile at the South Pole, now in midsummer, the maximum predicted is -26C.

  3. It is incredible to see people living and thriving in such conditions. They must have fantastic heating in their buildings and a ton of food stored in their houses.

    • Probably plenty of experience with such climate and damned good winter clothing. We could learn from them.

  4. 244 passengers evacuated in Xinjiang blizzard Xinhua,
    December 25, 2016
Rescuers have evacuated 244 motorists and passengers trapped in a blizzard in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
The people were stranded by snow drifts and low visibility on highways in Maytas in northern Xinjiang on Friday and Saturday, according to a local highway official.
All the passengers were rescued by early Saturday morning and their vehicles made safe.
Maytas is known for gales and blizzards, which often leave passengers stranded and force the closure of local highways.

  5. Egypt 24 – blizzard (will) hit the Palestine .. it is the strongest since 80 years !! The last local Arab News.
It seems that the current open snowstorm that hit the Middle East, which is dubbed “Storm Accessories” will not only be just the beginning of a series of polar storms unprecedented for this year and that there will be daily on the Levant.
At unanimous Magistracy meteorologist European and Russian that the Middle East will be under one effect of the worst blizzards in its history as a result of exposure the northern part of the European continent to a series of air highlands that will push the next wave Arctic from Siberia and the Russian north to the eastern part of the Mediterranean basin. Where several sources confirmed that the second wave of snowstorms hit Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Palestine, the end of the week.
While confirming Russian Meteorological Agency on the vulnerability of the western part of Russia’s high-pressure area will pay one of the largest blocs cloudy laden with snow and coming from Siberia to the Black Sea region and Turkey, and then to the south of the Levant within five days.
Sources in the Joint Commission of weather forecasts have confirmed Aruban on the same story as last announced that icy polar wave will reach the region late next Wednesday and may extend to parts of the Arabian Peninsula in the phenomenon that occurs for the first time in more than 80 years.
This has the same sources confirmed that this icy wave will cover all the Levant, including the coastal areas of Latakia in Syria to Gaza City to the south and exclude it from the Jordan Valley area, which reaches a height of more than 300 meters below sea level. It is worth mentioning that the coastal areas have not experienced Tsaqta snowfall since the fifties of the last century.
Preliminary forecast to rise may exceed two meters of snow at higher elevations in excess of 800 m, while the snow piling up in all areas rising from the sea which is a big challenge for devices operating in these countries.
In the same vein, experts in natural disasters that the country has warned that the storm would be coming Stdharbha what looks like a natural disaster of the second class, which could result in enormous losses of life and property as a result of lack of readiness of the institutions operating in the region for this kind of disaster.—%D8%B9%D8%A7%D8%B5%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%AB%D9%84%D8%AC%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%B9%D9%86%D9%8A%D9%81%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%B6%D8%B1%D8%A8-%D9%81%D9%84%D8%B3%D8%B7%D9%8A%D9%86-%D9%87%D9%8A-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A3%D9%82%D9%88%D9%89-%D9%85%D9%86%D8%B0-80-%D8%B9%D8%A7%D9%85-.html

Reader’s comment: It is still a forecast, but I’m having this gut feeling they sure could be right about it.

  6. we need some of that cold to come down to Florida to convince the old folks about global cooling! I was down there lately in the Villages visiting folks and whenever it gets a litte warm down there, some of them like to blame it on global warming! I guess you can’t fix stupid! Have they seen the weather in other parts of the world at all? Or just their backyard?

  7. That MINUS 62 C in Siberia is incredibly cold. With that temp in Siberia, how on Earth can anyone say it is in any way “warm” at the North Pole. One report from Norway says the warmest will be minus 15 C. Well, nothing MELTS at that temp !!
Meanwhile, if a High Pressure builds over SOUTHERN SWEDEN, the UK will have a SEVERE winter, because the wind will blow from the EAST , bringing that Siberian air to the UK.
Then Atlantic Lows will clash with the severely cold easterlies over the UK resulting in HEAVY snow. There will be no escape !
So let’s hope that a High does NOT build over southern Sweden ! At the moment, the UK has lovely winter weather……not very cold or windy !

However that weather means FOG in the central part of the UK, making driving dangerous !
Drive carefully …and a HAPPY NEW YEAR !!
