Snowfalls close New Zealand roads

25 May 2015 –  Multiple closures on South Island as cold straight from Antarctica spreads over New Zealand.

Heavy snow warnings are in place for Fiordland, Central Otago, Dunedin, and Banks Peninsula, with flurries in the deep south.

Roads closed by snow include State Highway 1 north Pine Hill to Waitati of Dunedin, State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Rd, between Hutt Valley and Wairarapa, SH93 in Southland and Clutha.

Queenstown Lakes District Council said 15-20cm of snow had fallen across the district and chains were essential everywhere, and the Crown Range road was closed.

The Lindis Pass was closed to heavy vehicles. Chains were needed on the State Highway 73 Arthur’s Pass inland from Christchurch and through part of the State Highway 7 Lewis Pass near Hanmer Springs.

Temperatures dropped to -5 degrees C in Lake Tekapo, -2 in Ranfurly, Wanaka dropped to -2, and Queenstown to -1C.

A MetService spokeswoman said it was not clear how much snow had fallen on ski i fields around New Zealand but it was likely a “good amount”.×349.14yvue.png/1432494517820.jpg
