Dwarfs previous record set in 1892. In fact, more snow has already fallen on the Motor City this month than it gets on average during the entire month of January.
Saturday’s snowfall of 6.8 inches at Detroit Metro Airport dwarfs the city’s previous record for the date of 5.2 inches set in 1892. This morning (Sunday) started with a “dusting” of snow in some areas, including downtown Detroit. The snow could return in the afternoon, leaving another inch of accumulation.
To put this in perspective, on average, Detroit sees 12.5 inches of snow in the entire month of January. But this year, between Jan. 11, which had more than 8 inches of snow, and Saturday, which had almost 7, that average has already been topped.
Arctic air has now moved back into the region.
