Sun goes spotless for majority of 2018

“Earth is set for BIG FREEZE,” reads headline in The Express.

Website Space Weather says: “For the 133rd day this year, the face of the sun is blank.

With only 241 days of 2018 passing, that means the sun has remained spotless for the majority of the year.

Experts warn this is a sign that the solar minimum is on its way.

The last time there was a prolonged solar minimum, it led to a ‘mini ice-age’, scientifically known as the Maunder minimum – which lasted for 70 years.

The Maunder minimum began in 1645 and lasted to 1715 when sunspots were exceedingly rare.

During this period, temperatures dropped globally by 1.3 degrees Celsius leading to shorter seasons and ultimately food shortages.

Vencore Weather, a meteorological website, said: “Low solar activity is known to have consequences on Earth’s weather and climate and it also is well correlated with an increase in cosmic rays that reach the upper part of the atmosphere.

“The blank sun is a sign that the next solar minimum is approaching and there will be an increasing number of spotless days over the next few years.”

  1. “with an increase in cosmic rays that reach the upper part of the atmosphere”
According to Piers Corbyn ( Cosmic rays have no significance on climate as they are dwarfed by the solar proton flux which is magnitudes greater. Makes sense physically.

  2. In New Orleans this past August we had lower temperatures than in June or july. We had at least 2 fronts come through. I have never seen what is happening now before. Finally on Sept. 3rd we have our first threat of a tropical system and it is only a tropical storm warning. Everything is pointing to a cooler cycle.

    • The same for Atlanta GA. June, July and August we had 2-3F cooler temp then average and 50-170%more rain. It was actually a pleasant summer for HOTlanta!!! :))

  3. Maunder was a two cycle GSM with Gleissberg period between them. As was Spoorer. The spots were there but as a large proportion of fragment or very small short lived spots, to small for the Optics of the mid 1600 to see.

This Modern GSM is very simlar to LALIA, Oort, Wolf and Dalton, a two cycle event with the first cycle the active cycle and the second a recovery cycle. The interesting point about this modern cycle it was prediced.
The the hindcast of solar events and the forward cast predicting when the next will occure:
Note the Gleissberg period from 2078-2120
    A similar cycle to SC20 starting 2144
    The next GSM starting 2188.

  4. on the “its not funny…but it is” topic
a whole pile of places and islands got govvy grants to RAISE their jetties so when the seas rose they could still load n unload goods
people using them are having issues NOW as theyre too high for the present levels
and if it gets colder ice n snow replace rain and the oceans drop a bit(or a LOT)..hmm?
of course the people instigating this stupidity and expense will be nowhere to be found..

    • Yes, I have noticed that there was aurora on Saturn based on Hubble pictures…our co2 affected that planet too! amazing properties it has! 🙂

  5. This report doesn’t hit the mark. Actually solar minimum is still expected to be 2019/20….this is the dive year to be compared to 2007. That had 154 spotless days, /08 264 and /09 260. So like for like AS expected 2018 (11 yr Schwabe cycle) is headed to be much lower than 07….2019/20 will smash 08/09…..but the whammy is yet to come…..we will continue down and next will be Maunder depth. Wrap up as it’s going to get cold….very cold

  6. Hold on to your woolies and restock the woodpiles, folks, we’re in for a rough ride! (And potentially no power in the autumn/winter!)

It’s National Preparation Month so let’s roll up our sleeves and get to it!

  7. Maybe encroaching ice will overrun AGW believing politicians in D.C…and reduce the “Idiot Index”. I find it difficult to believe that people intelligent enough to hold elected office can actually subscribe to AGW. Just follow the $$…

  8. The problem is that nobody will take anything The Express says seriously. It’s a rag. So if you were warning someone about the coming LIA, and use this rag as your source of info, people will just turn away. Even the Express itself doesn’t take itself seriously. 🙂 It’s submental.
