Sunspot activity dwindling to lows not seen in 200 years

“The sun is as blank as a billiard ball,” says geologist David Archibald.

“The latest image from the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows our sun as a blank canvas,” says Archibald, an avowed global warming skeptic . “No sunspots. Solar cycle 24 activity continues to be lowest in nearly 200 years.”

    • We have years to go before the minimum is reached this is why it is so good to see solar so low so early.

I say around 2020 will be when the true solar minimum wll be reached. A long way to go.

    • Geoff, as you know.
The minimum started with the first shallow AMP event during SC23 which started the pause, this Cycle has a major AMP event still running, with another in SC25 perhaps., followed by a pair of reduced cycles to follow, similar to SC20.
What we are experiencing is solar energy lag. The El Nino is one aspect of it, the following La Nina is another, the PDO and NAO are others, as are Meridional Jet Streams in both Hemispheres, all due to the reduced EUV output from our Sun.
The Minimum started well before the start of this cycle 24, the MIA roller coaster has just started its climate plunge to the bottom.

      • JimBob, the AMP event that affected SC24 is now over and there are no further events until 2150. The 2150 event will probably produce a SC20 type cycle.

SC25 will be driven by the remnants of SC24 in my opinion, the left over weak position of the solar poles perhaps upsetting the solar dynamo so that SC25 is similar to SC24.

After that we can expect the following cycles to gradually increase in a similar fashion to the cycles that followed on from the early 1900’s.

  1. Look, 7 days without sunspots means nothing.

To project any future scenarios based on such short-term measurements is meaningless.

      • Exactly

It probably means ALL of the global warming attributed to CO2 by the IPCC is actually due to the solar grand maximum which occurred during the 20th century – especially the latter half – with 5 of the most active cycles ever observed, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23 in the period of ~250 + years of records.

Solar cycle 24 was predicted to be large by some. “Another group of researchers, including one at NASA, were predicting that it “looks like its going to be one of the most intense cycles since record-keeping began almost 400 years ago.”

Solar cycle 24 was soon recognized for what it has become – “It is on track to be the Solar Cycle with the lowest recorded sunspot activity since accurate records began in 1750.”

Hence no-one is basing future trends on short term measurements of a few days, weeks or months.

Definite repeatable cycles have been identified and it is these that form the basis of prediction.

All we can say is that time will tell if the predictions are right.

This is never mentioned in the MSM.

  2. good I hope it drops to 456 degrees below zero this winter, freezing all liberals instantly – never to return!

    • I am a liberal. I am an environmentalist, and I believe in women’s rights, civil rights and fair wages. But I’m also not going to vote for the current liberal candidate and shudder to imagine it.

The three things that I don’t have in common with liberals is the desire to Silence people for the sake of someone else’s fickle feelings. Nor do I want to take away their Amendment Rights of citizens because, frankly, it’s not an American thing to do. And Globalism comes with a unique set of *serious* problems that have not been addressed yet, and I also understand that those problems won’t be addressed because it’s against special interests

There are ways to care for the environment without hurting people’s lifestyles. Anyone who thinks that we need a complete financial overhaul coupled with removing rights are stuck inside the imaginary box thinking.

This is why I’m convinced that the AGW machine isn’t about helping the environment at all, it’s a mislabeled dictatorship that’s distracting people with pictures of frolicking puppies. It’s like having a nuclear plant labeled ‘chocolate chip factory’ and I’m not interested in perpetuating bullshit. And it is Bullshit to say “This is what the future will look like!” And display pictures of clean rolling hills and dense forests to a populace, without adding the phrase “…and you won’t be in it.”

So please don’t freeze *all* liberals; we aren’t all bad. 🙂

      • I am also a liberal, an environmentalist, believe in women’s rights, civil rights, fair wages and also the legalization of many currently illegal drugs. But I’m not a big government leftist that believes in the use of force and control to bring about every change that I want to see in society, and I think federal action with regards to any of the issues listed above should be rare extremely rare and usually considered unconstitutional (especially regarding “fair” wages). I really appreciate your drawing the distinction of you views as well as your additional comments. I don’t always “get” or trust republicans, but I’ve come to understand that the democratic party is the more illiberal of the two by far.

  3. Canada day in Barrie Ontario was cold and rainy which is unusual. I told several people that we are in mini ice age and they were skeptical. What do we need to bring people to their senses? Snowmageddon in July?

    • I’ve stopped telling people. They’re not interested in hearing anything outside what’s accepted in the MSM. Our culture has raised a couple generations of people who do not know how to react maturely to contrary data. If they want to educate themselves, they will. If they don’t want to, they will ignore you at most, label you at moderate, and try to throw you in jail at worst. (On a side note, what would happen to people who are jailed at the time of agricultural collapse? Freed, fed, or murdered?)

  4. The US govt knows about this cooling.

US gov’t is already making preparations for food riots and civil unrest

  5. 0 sunspots mean somthing when the magnetic field is in its current state .It may have effects unlike the last two minumums and more like the one before them .

    • For once the UK Met Office showed a graphic of the track of the Jet Stream which has produced all the cold, wind and showers over the last few days.
The Meridional nature was visible for all to see, diving down from Iceland, over Ireland, curling over the Southern half of England, and then curling up the North west coast of Europe to over Norway.
On the Northern edge of the Stream was some very cold air for mid-Summer, with the Freezing point well down to below 4000 Ft, normally it should be above 9000 Ft during Summer. The Jet has moved further east and late spring is returning.

      • I find it surprising if not odd that the sun has all of a sudden at this stage of solar cycle 24 gone spotless for 11 days in a row.

Anyone have anything to say about what this might suggest for solar activity going forward? Is solar cycle 24 still going to be a long cycle?

        • Salvatore, you are contradicting yourself. On July 2nd you wrote ‘we have years before the minimum is reached. This is why it is so good to see solar (activity?) so low so early’. Now you’re saying that it surprising. So which is it? Can’t be both!

  6. To say a streak of spotless days over a week long 3 to 4 years before the projected minimum is meaningless is erroneous in my opinion. Looking at other recent cycles such streaks only happened within 1 to 2 years of minimum. This is easily going to be the longest and deepest minimum at least since the early 1800s. This is going to be interesting to watch!

  7. I am expecting that the days of no sunspots will start increasing to weeks then months as we head to 2019-this is sun cycle 24 minimum. When sun cycle 25 arrives I expect sunspots to increase in 2021 until 2023(cycle 25 maximum) then fade away with no sunspots for months or years.
