Frozen or not, wind turbines do not produce electricity when the wind is not blowing. I believe that they require 25 mph winds to perform as advertised.

Three of the largest wind farms in Texas (Roscoe, Buffalo Gap, and Sweetwater) are located in Nolan County. After the initial burst of wind that came as the artic front moved through, it became calm and there was not enough wind to produce as advertised. This calm existed throughout the rolling blackouts. There seems to always a lack of wind after the initial storms as temperatures drop and demand for power increases. Here in Texas we also have a lack of wind in the hottest days of summer and demand for electrical power spikes.

Bottom line is that the power output of wind turbines is inversely proportional to demand.

  1. In the Altamont Pass in California, the wind blows as the interior heats up. So in California it’s complementary because the air conditioners tend to come on line as the wind blows. In other words, it somewhat works there.

    I read that Texas has 25% of electricity generation from wind turbines. If true, that’s a major problem. I think the national average would be closer to 6%. Wind power requires bass load from reliable generation like coal, nat gas, nuclear, and/or hydro to compensate for its intermittent nature.

  2. Bottom line is that Texas will have to snap out of it and build some nuclear reactors, unless it wants to permanently return to the Dark Ages. If you all down there in my home state (yes, I do love where I am now, but Texas has hill country that can’t be beat) don’t do that before long, it will just get worse.

    Still don’t understand why nuclear reactors are so frightening to people. The Clinton and Princeton reactors are still going strong, and sometimes, the power company idjits have to borrow from them to keep us going.

  3. solar at least sometimes manages to produce in daylight, if theres sun or no snow on em;-)
    wind however can manage ZERO day OR night,
    quite an expensive accomplishment isnt it?

My Mom is a certifiable lunatic who has ranted and raved about alternate energy sources for DECADES. “I just don’t understand why we can’t just use wind and solar…” is a refrain I’ve heard hundreds- if not thousands- of times during my life. One such time was at a evening family gathering for Christmas. It was pitch black outside; not a puff of wind was blowing. I took her outside and asked, “How much power do you think a solar panel would be generating right now?” No answer. “How much power would a wind turbine be generating right now?’ No answer. A angry scowl was the only response. EVERY TIME I hear someone such as AOC or St. Greta of Thurnburg, I think back to the mad ravings of the family lunatic. No sense even trying to reason with any of them.

  5. And, no one talks about solar! There seems to be a cover up here as well. A study released several years ago by a liberal university cited increasing problems worldwide with used solar panels. The toxic mix contained in the panels was described as more toxic that spent nuclear fuel, and thus far, there is no efficient means to recycle these materials out. And, there is growing fear that when these solar panels break, precipitation will leach hazardous materials into the nearby ground and water systems …. the next environmental nightmare! But, the greenies and environmentalists won’t talk about this … it might cast a shadow of doubt on their causes, which we know shifted from true environmental stewardship years ago, and now is just another big profit agenda!
