Thirty Percent Increase In Arctic Sea Ice Volume Over Past 10 years

Ha ha ha – What tipping point?

Posted on  by tonyheller

Ten years ago, America’s leading Arctic experts said the climate had passed the tipping point, and the Arctic could be ice-free between 2013 and 2018.

28 Aug 2008, 7 – The Daily Journal at

The exact opposite has happened. Arctic sea ice volume is up 30% over the past ten years.

  1. I this is “great news” for the starving polar bears. but as commerce in the north is dependent on ice breakers…there is a backdoor into verifying the ice expansion.
I like the chart. I would like to really see is to have it overlaid on the solar cycle charts to drive home that it is NOT the ambient air temps (or CO2) that melt surface ice….it is solar.
Then another comparison to overlay on the chart is what is happening on the seafloor in the artic with known volcanic activity to show the “warming” of water below the ice.
A picture is worth thousands of words to those who can not comprehend they are farther than left field.

    • I think the Arctic ice is determined by ocean currents.

      “Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation
Once we adjust for overall global warming trends, an oscillation in Atlantic sea-surface temperatures emerges. The ocean went through a warm period in the 1930s/1940s and again in the 1990s/2000s. However the 1970s/1980s were much cooler and there are hints of a transition to a relatively cold period at the moment.”

Seems entirely consistent with Arctic ice observations and nothing to do with CO2.

Ocean warming is not due to radiation from atmospheric GHG’s.

      • And every thing to do with how much UV our variable UV star emmits during various portions of its 172 year cycle.
GSM 2cycles, Gliessberg cool to tepid period 70 years , Hot period 70 years

  2. Well said Tony Heller!
And over the decades the ice has come and gone (originally copied from newspaper cutting from Tony Heller’s original site many years ago.) …

Is our climate changing? The succession of temperate summers and open winters through several years, culminating last winter in the almost total failure of the ice crop throughout the valley of the Hudson, makes the question pertinent. The older inhabitants tell us that the Winters are not as cold now as when they were young, and we have all observed a marked diminution of the average cold even in this last decade. – New York Times June 23, 1890

The question is again being discussed whether recent and long-continued observations do not point to the advent of a second glacial period, when the countries now basking in the fostering warmth of a tropical sun will ultimately give way to the perennial frost and snow of the polar regions – New York Times – February 24, 1895,

The Oceanographic observations have, however, been even more interesting. Ice conditions were exceptional. In fact, so little ice has never been noted. The expedition all but established a record….Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society – January 1905

“Fifth ice age is on the way…..Human race will have to fight for its existence against cold.” – Los Angles Times October 23, 1912

The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot…. Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers, he declared, all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone… Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared. Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts, which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds. – Washington Post 11/2/1922

Scientist says Arctic ice will wipe out Canada, Professor Gregory of Yale University stated that “another world ice-epoch is due.” He was the American representative to the Pan-Pacific Science Congress and warned that North America would disappear as far south as the Great Lakes, and huge parts of Asia and Europe would be “wiped out.” – Chicago Tribune August 9, 1923

The discoveries of changes in the sun’s heat and southward advance of glaciers in recent years have given rise to the conjectures of the possible advent of a new ice age – Time Magazine 9/10/1923

America in longest warm spell since 1776; temperature line records a 25 year rise – New York Times 3/27/1933

“Gaffers who claim that winters were harder when they were boys are quite right…weather men have no doubt that the world at least for the time being is growing warmer.” – Time Magazine Jan. 2 1939

More than eighteen years of observing the fluctuations of Arctic weather conditions in the fifty-eight Soviet scientific stations in the Far North….lead Russian meteorologists to a forecast of warmer winters and hotter summers for the North and South Poles. They believe that the earth is entering a new cycle of warmer weather. A series of curious discoveries have been announced in support of this theory. It has been noted that year by year, for the past two decades, the fringe of the Polar icepack has been creeping northward in the Barents Sea. As compared with the year 1900, the total ice surface of this body of water has decreased by twenty per cent. Various expeditions have discovered that warmth-loving species of fish have migrated in great shoals to waters farther north than they had ever been seen before..Our generation is living in a period when remarkable changes are taking place almost everywhere throughout the world. – Examiner April 12, 1939

A mysterious warming of the climate is slowly manifesting itself in the Arctic, engendering a “serious international problem,” – New York Times – May 30, 1947

Greenland’s polar climate has moderated so consistently that communities of hunters have evolved into fishing villages. Sea mammals, vanishing from the west coast, have been replaced by codfish and other fish species in the area’s southern waters. – New York Times August 29, 1954

After a week of discussions on the causes of climate change, an assembly of specialists from several continents seems to have reached unanimous agreement on only one point: it is getting colder. – New York Times – January 30, 1961

Like an outrigger canoe riding before a huge comber, the earth with its inhabitants is caught on the downslope of an immense climatic wave that is plunging us toward another Ice Age. – Los Angeles Times December 23, 1962
Alarmists (and a useless news reporting) have always been with us, it’s just these days they have acquired a huge political momentum from distorting how science is performed, verified, and communicated.
Ordinary people are now being taken for a ride to the tune of trillions of dollars on the back of this CO2 stupidity. Taken by those who are egotists chasing personal fame to the detriment of real scientific endeavors; whose who are power-hungry wanting a world government and a dilution of people’s current rights and responsibilities; whose who are very greedy after a cut of everyone’s wealth.

  3. I’ll pay to see Al Gore’s face… could a nobel prize be revoked?

P.S.: Meanwhile we have the first hurricane in the Mediterranean.

  4. Off topic but Australian news – OK primarily the ABC – carried a horror story about a tropical cyclone in the South Pacific in September a few days ago.

A cyclone in September – that is almost unprecedented and obviously due to global warming/climate change – shock horror !

Of course that was it for the media – the cyclone quickly fizzled without ever really forming and was downgraded to a storm.

“The Australian Bureau of Meteorology says ex-Tropical Cyclone Liua is moving west at 11 kilometres per hour, and is expected to continue on this track and weaken further.”

Did I hear this on Australian media ?

NO – it is a quote from Radio NZ.

True, I could have missed the Australian media telling the truth about the well publicized announcement of evidence of impending thermageddon but I think that once having raised the alarm it served their purpose to ignore the real truth and say nothing – the story was just a beat up in the first place.

Boy who cried wolf anyone ?

  5. The local smoothy joint went to plastic like mcdonalds did with their cups, they Sure could use some of the extra ice for the drinks to stay cold !:)

  6. Wouldn’t it be lovely to see the Daily Journal go back to Serreze and ask him for an update. Seems reasonable given we have reached the time limit he set.

  7. Micro,
I doubt Al’s face will show much dismay as he gazes at the fortune he nade from this hoax. Al Gore and company never believed this nonsense. They made their money.

  8. Global warming is likely fiction or insignificant but megafauna extinction is very real. thats where efforts should be directed. Who wants a world without elephants?

  9. And it came to pass that the beginnings of “The Troubles” for Humans came into serious notice when two (of many) successive years of increasingly devastating crop failures echoed around the Globe.

To make matters worse, because Humans are very well known to become very bellicose whenever the sharp pangs of Hunger strike their collective bellies, uncountable numbers of localized violence occurred – as hordes of the Hungry resorted to no-holds barred Thievery – generally against a well-armed loosely organized assortment of individuals who had amassed personal stockpiles of Food.

It was reported that Al Gore was last seen babbling almost incoherently, replete with an occasional outburst purporting to prove how ” It takes an unfathomable amount of CO2 Heat in order to create these worldwide swiftly advancing mile-high walls of ICE. Unfathomable! I’m serial. ”

  10. I would like to see statistics on Arctic snowfall over the period. Ice accumulates when more snow falls than melts over the course of a year. In the Nortern Hemisphere, the farther north you go, the greater the relative importance of the snowfall, since less melting goes on. Greater snowfall may or may not be related to long term climate change. It’s related to weather patterns, which are pretty complicated. But it must be nice to be a smug liberal…or smug conservative, too, but I think there are a log fewer of those.

    • You can, look at the stats for Antarctica now that its major freeze cycle is concluding, and Greenland now that its freeze period has started 6 weeks earlier than during the same period for SC23.
Meridional Jet Streams provide trillions of tons of extra water into both Polar Deserts, which don’t reach those zones during the “normal” solar high output solar cycles like SC17,18 and 19 and SC21,22 and 23 as the Jet Streams are lateral.
The previous time Meridional Jet Streams impacted the world, was SC20 and it gave rise to the first alarm over a glaciation tipping point some 1500 years too early.
The other point which is only now becoming apparent are the impacts of long lasting Solar Coronial Holes during the Solar Minimum period between each cycle and more importantly during most of a GSM like Dalton and this new Modern GSM
The world weather history is littered with long lasting SAW events during the minimum period which can be cold, cool and hot and depend on the time of year they start. North Western Europe is a prime example, as is North West America. South East Australia seems to have caught one at the end of their winter. They are regional to start, but with multiple regional events taking place they have a hemisphere impact.

  11. Wait you have it all wrong. The North West Passage is all but assured by 2020.

    It’s an Ice Road…… LOL
