UK – River Thames freezes over for first time in 60 years

Temperatures plunge to record lows. Shades of the Little Ice Age! A reminder of what can happen during a solar minimum.

The River Thames in London froze over for the first time in 60 years as temperatures plummeted overnight.

For the first time since 1963, parts of the River Thames were frozen over as witnesses spotted seagulls perching on the icy surface in Teddington. The River Great Ouse in Cambridgeshire was also frozen over leaving boats stuck.

It comes as temperatures dropped to below 0C in parts of England.

In Ravensworth, North Yorkshire, temperatures plummeted to -15.3C last night as the UK braced for up to four inches of snow and 50mph gales today.

In Newcastle, families woke up to the city blanketed by snow with the wintry weather also hitting parts of northeast Scotland as well as coastal regions in northeast England.

Meanwhile, Scotland recorded its coldest February night since 1955 and record snowfall in Braemar.

Oli Claydon, a spokesperson for the Met Office, said: “Usually you’d expect records to be broken by point such-and-such of a degree but here we are looking at big differences.”

    • That’s easy, Alan! See the previous article on this fine site. The global warming industry and its fans will simply tell you that the heating of the Earth leads to extreme cold in some places. But the details are far too complex to explain to ordinary people.

      • Yeah and after that they will tell us for the umpteenth consecutive time the earth had record temperature. Beating the previous year by 1/100 of. A degree C

  1. What happened to the tropical rain forest in England by now? And those people are trying to convince us that the last decade was the hottest ever? NOT!
If so, you sure would not be seeing snow deep into the southern US and -73F in eastern Russia lately. These people that claim that are beyond laughable and should be put into the daily comic show for Beavis and Butthead!

    • What is rather less funny is that the world’s governments and corporations plough straight ahead with their plans to cripple industry and impoverish us all by reducing CO2 emissions.

Experience strongly suggests that neither facts, logic nor the wishes of the citizen body will influence them in the slightest.

The only important thing – as with the “coronavirus crisis” – is that the politicians must not have to admit that they were wrong.

  2. :For the first time since 1963, parts of the River Thames were frozen over :
Cold day in hell when my president was shot by Israel koshernostra.

  3. Frost fairs on the Thames could be held, like they were in the 18th ->19th century. And that was before people had furnaces and heated their homes by fireplaces burning wood.

  4. The pubs are shut during the lockdown but if they weren’t then anyone for scotch on the rocks? My shout.
The trick is not to curse the ice. Find a use for it. Same for any sort of adversity and curveball life throws your way.
Today is a lot warmer in London thank God.
    Feeling Gooooooooooood !
