Wyoming – Snow and record-low temperatures tonight

AN UNSEASONABLY COLD AIRMASS WILL REMAIN OVER SOUTHERN WYOMING THIS EVENING THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

18 August 2015 – RECORD LOW TEMPERATURES FOR AUGUST ARE BECOMING LIKELY FOR MANY AREAS IN SOUTHEAST WYOMING.

FOR TONIGHT…SNOW LEVELS COULD FALL TO AROUND 7800 FEET ACROSS THE SOUTH LARAMIE RANGE AND ALBANY COUNTY AS WELL AS THE SNOWY RANGE.

AN UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE IS FORECAST TO MOVE SOUTH THROUGH THE AREA THIS EVENING WITH WIDESPREAD RAIN DEVELOPING ROUGHLY FROM ARLINGTON TO PINE BLUFFS.

LOCATIONS ABOVE 7800 FEET ARE LIKELY TO SEE RAIN CHANGE OVER TO SNOW…POSSIBLY HEAVY AT TIMES FROM MIDNIGHT THROUGH SUNRISE WEDNESDAY.

FOR AREAS IMMEDIATELY BELOW 7800 FEET…THERE COULD BE A MIXTURE OF RAIN AND SNOW DOWN TO ROUGHLY 7500 FEET WITH A COLD RAIN FOR ELEVATIONS BELOW 7500 FEET.

ACCUMULATIONS OF SNOW ARE NOT EXPECTED ON ROAD SURFACES…BUT 1-2 INCHES COULD ACCUMULATE ON GRASSY SURFACES. PERSONS LIVING AROUND 7800 FEET OR ABOVE ELEVATION SHOULD TAKE ACTIONS TO PROTECT VULNERABLE OUTDOOR PLANTS AND GARDENS TODAY.

THOSE PLANNING TRAVEL OVER THE INTERSTATE 80 SUMMIT WEST OF CHEYENNE THROUGH WEST OF LARAMIE SHOULD BE PREPARED FOR REDUCED VISIBILITIES IN SNOW FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING AROUND SUNRISE.

GFS SOUNDING SHOWING A VERY GOOD POSSIBILITY OF WET
BULBING DOWN TO 32-33 DEGREES AND WITH ANY DYNAMIC COOLING…WE COULD DROP ANOTHER DEGREE OR TWO.

…LOWS IN THE UPPER 30S AT CHEYENNE…NEAR FREEZING
AT LARAMIE AND MID 30S AT RAWLINS. ALL OF THESE ARE EITHER RECORD OR NEAR RECORD LOWS FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.

SNOW ABOVE 7800 FEET ELEVATION WITH A RAIN/SNOW MIX DOWN TO 7500 FEET. GIVEN THE WARM ROAD SURFACES… LOW 60S ACCORDING TO WYDOT…SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ARE NOT LIKELY FOR THE I-80 SUMMIT. MAYBE AN INCH OR
TWO ON GRASSY SURFACES THOUGH.

INDEED A RARE EVENT FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR.
